Advice needed about thrush and staph please

My 3yr old DD has had a staph infection which we are nearly over, 2 days left of a 10 course of ABs. This is her fourth staph infection.

On Thursday I took her back to the GP as she was avoiding weeing and has a small red patch near her bottom. I was worried the staph was returning but the GP said it was thrush and gave us canes tan cream. She also did a urine sample that was negative.

Since then we have had 7 poo accidents in 2 days and the red patch is incredibly sore and at least 3 times bigger. I also see 2 new staph spots.

We are at the end of our tether with this and would love some advice as to what to do next. Does this sound like thrush?

I hate to see her in so much pain and she is also not thrilled to be having accidents

has the gp actually done a swab to see what the infection is - 4 staph infections sounds like an infection that isnt being cleared up properly and perhaps the gp ought to be reviewing which antibiotics are used.

get back to the gp, or perhaps another one at the same practice, and do a bit of pushing. I'd be asking
have they done swab tests? if not, why not. what other kinds of antibiotics can be used to treat?
It doesn't really sound like thrush from your description, when mine had it on their bums it was lots of tiny tiny red spots. it also doesn't sound like it's responding to the canestan

I think you need to go back to the doctor. DD has a staph infection now as well (on day 4 of ABs) and paed prescribed oral ABs, AB cream for spots, AB cream for the inside of the nose(as this is where staph likes to live) and antiseptic gel for showering (you know that no baths are allowed, yes?). DD hasn't got any new spots so far, but some of the ones she had are not disappearing as fast as I would like them to.

Yeah, we live in nation of hypochondriacs France, doctors are pretty good here.

No baths because staph likes warm water and so can 'swim' around in the bathwater, infecting other areas of skin.

oh yes I well remember the days, coming back from the doctors with an armful of medicines for a common cold
I do heart those French doctors. My fave are German though - as thorough as the French but much more down to earth and stoic; got to love a stereotype in action

I agree with Winnybella, ask for all these things to make sure the staph is probably killed off otherwise it keeps coming back. dd had the same treatment here (but from private paediatrician), however, you know now what to ask for so I would just go with shopping list to GP. Staph can potentially be very serious, in the worst situation you can end up with blood poisoning. It lives naturally in the nose of almost 30% of people, so be vigilant about picking noses and ensure thorough hand washing. In the meantime it might help to put sudocrem on the red spots until you have anti-biotic cream. I would definitely go back to GP tomorrow. Hope she gets better soon.

Thanks everyone.
Very interested to hear about the no bath thing, I have never heard that. We do have cream, oral AB and hibi scrub wash but never had a swab taken and not convinced these ones are perfect. Will take her back in on tues (once current abs are done) if no improvement.

By the way, the recent doc I saw said if she gets it again they might test for an immune disorder....... has anyone else been told this? Actually apart from the staph she is generally very healthy

No baths, definitely.

Paed said that they had a girl that had a recurrent staph infection and since they treated her with the nasal AB cream (on top of all the other stuff) it finally went away.

I think they should first try proper, thorough treatment before talking about immune disorder . I see why they mentioned it, but, really, it could be just that either the ABs didn't work properly, or she keeps getting it from other children...It's very common amongst kids, apparently.

Oh, and the paed said that one of the symptoms that it's in the nose is the yellow crust. I was like 'oh, really, I don't think DD has that" and she said'yes, look' and indeed, she had a bit- I never really looked and thought it was just the usual bits of dry mucus iyswim.

Ds1 also had it in nose yuck, he has immune condition but we knew that already, more likely she keeps reinfecting herself

Nice, a yellow crust, will look in the morning!
Anyone else find that it affects how/when they go to the loo?

I would think it could be the ABs maybe that cause the tummy trouble, perhaps?

Good point. Though it's not diahorea (sp?) just seems unable to know when it's coming and it is very frequent

Thank you so much for all the replies by the way. It's good to find people who know about it, most of my friends say What's staph?

Mercibucket, if you don't mind me asking, what is the immune disorder your son has/ how did you know he had it?

It's something he's had for a long time but it's treated with steroids and other immunosuppressants which is why infections can be hard to shake. Honestly this sounds more like an infection that's never quite being hit hard enough

Tbh I would take her to the docs tomorrow as you said she has 2 new spots. That shouldn't happen if the ABs were working.

DD's AB's are Cefpodoxime, they seem to be woking in that there's no new spots and the old ones seem to be healing (albeit a bit slowly). Yellow crust is gone with the nasal AB cream.

No temp, bodily functions back to normal, red patch going. She still has one big spot near tummy button which I am using the hibi scub on and fucidin cream on. Hopefully we can avoid the need for more wretched oral ABs.

On a friend's recommendation we have started her on a children's probiotic powder, which will hopefully give her a boost.

If it comes back with a vengeance I shall demand a swab so we know exactly what we are dealing with. The children have Bupa through my work so I might even ask for a referral to a paediatrician.

She is back to Nursery school on Thursday so I am glad she seems on the mend.

Ah, good.

DD otoh has developed one little spot on her bum yesterday, on day 8 of ABs. WTF? I wonder if perhaps there are some strains resistant to ABs, or semi-resistant iyswim.
