Swollen Gland

I have just noticed that DS (4years) has a large swollen gland in his neck. It is near the bottom of neck at the left hand side. It is tender to touch but he hasn't complained at all. Called GP and suggested that I just keep an eye on it for now. He is suffering from hayfever and has been quite bad over the weekend so wasn't sure if this was connected. I had allergy problems as a child and my mum said that my glands were often up.

Any advice as of course googling always gives some much more worrying suggestions.

I had this. It didn't hurt, I just looked odd and lop-sided. The doctor decided it was just a reaction to infection and nothing much to worry about. It went down after a few days.

If it keeps growing, doesn't go down or starts hurting I would take him in to get it checked out, but it is probably just an immune system reaciton.

Hi Thanks for your reply. His gland is still swollen nearly 2 weeks later. I took him to my GP 10 days ago and at first she didn't think it was a a gland but called a more senior doctor in who thought it was. Told to keep an eye on it but to come back in 2 weeks if not gone. Worried sick that it may be something more sinister going on. Anyone know how long glands take to go down normally. Seems fine in himself but complains occasionally of tummy ache.

Would say tummy pains can often be gland pain too. When DS has had tonsilitis he gets sore tummy which doc has said is usually pain coming from glands in groin area.

My DS has one of these..it's about the size of a big pea..i was worried sick about the whole thing

Our GP referred us to the childrens ENT dept where they quickly told me that yes it was a swollen gland but they weren't in the least bit concerned...they did run routine blood tests just to dot all the i's and cross all the t's as they put it

He's had it for years...i think a v encouraging sign is if they're well in themselves as i think children who have something more sinister tend to get v ill v quickly

My daughter has had one of these for years. I worry on & off about it & have asked gp several times & he's not concerned at all. She also complains of a sore tummy no matter what is wrong with her & gp has said it's swollen glands in tummy. I remember the worry when I first felt it on her neck.
