Can children get tonsillitis with high temperature but no throat pain?

How do you know it is tonsillitis?

Tell tale giveaway (in my experience!) is white dots on the throat, but generally some level of sore throat.

My dd had a few tonsillitis (diagnosed by GPs) with high temperture but on a few of these occasions, there was no sore throat (unless her pain threshold is high!)

Tonsils shrink with age, so does that mean children usually grow out of tonsillitis? If so, approx how old?
