Ear infections and school?

DS1 has an ear infection. Started Friday with lots of pain, then on Saturday sometime must have perforated and started with the snotty ear thing. I thought it would clear up by itself, so have been just keeping ear stuffed with cotton wool and Nurofen for the pain. He's mostly ok in himself, was a bit tired and whingy, and obviously a bit miserable when it hurts but no temp.

Kept him off school yesterday but sent him in again today as I have to work. Now I'm wondering if he should go to doc's - my understanding is that they don't dish out anti-b's for ear infections that much as most of them are viral, is that right? Should he be off school until it's completely better? School have made no comment but then they rarely comment on anything (that's a whole other story ).

Doc's is such a pain in the arse to get appts I wanted to seek opinions before I go in and have them go 'yep, it's an ear infection, nothing we can do'.

My ds always gets antibiotics when his ear bursts, its not to clear up the infection thats bursts but to stop more infection and help it heal!

I think i might have to go to the docs - why do they make it so hard to get an appt?

DD has always had ab's for the perforation, as the fluid is usually secondarily infected, even if the first infection was viral. I can't imagine any GP would think you were odd for asking to be seen with a child who has a perforation and is in pain. Good luck!

My Gp doesn't give out antibiotics easily, but they've always said when ds gets an ear perforation he should be getting antibiotics within 24 hours. Sorry.

Well, we went to the nurse practitioner this morning, who said it is an ear infection, but it seems to have improved this morning, so she said they'll send a sample off to the lab but unless he gets worse, they wouldn't recommend ABs. Oh well, at least we've had it checked out!
