I have shingles. Had it a week before diagnosis. 6 year old had headache yesterday and didn't look great. Early to bed, disturbed by his siblings, sat with him as he was scared of the sounds Confused. Brought him home without going in to school as looked very pale. Calpol at 7.30 (late for him to wake) as temp was 38. Came down to 35 after 30 minutes, back 1 or 2 degrees half an hour ago. MIL just asked me if he has chicken pox. He has already had it but you can get it more than once, His brother has had it twice at 3. DS2 had it at 14 months. Is sleeping so don't want to disturb to look. Tell me what I need to know as not functioning very well Sad.

Starting writing down doses, timings and temps from now. It helps believe me. Try lots and lots of fluids, even if he just takes sips all day. Don't worry about food at this stage. :)

Thanks. I am not well myself so not been as good as I should have been. Off to check on him now.

Be wary of alternating medication. It is actually recommended that you try ibuprofen if paracetemol isn't working and if it works better then just stick to that. Also be careful with dosage because you give ibuprofen less often than paracetemol.

Shivering is the body's way of trying to warm itself up and I wouldn't strip him or sponge him if he's shivering. Keep him in loose, cool clothing and if he is still shivering then cover him with a light blanket that he can throw off if he's feeling too warm. Try to remember that the fever is actually trying to help him fight off whatever bug he has and it isn't something to be afraid of. Just try to keep him as comfortable as possible and make sure he keeps drinking. If you are worried about him then take him to be seen in out of hours - you know him best.

Well he slept all night and his temp is normal. He has had some breakfast and DH thinks he should stay at home again. Of course DS2 wants too. I feel bad as I wanted a sleep myself today with not being well (got shingles). He just said his throat hurts.

Oh I am glad he s a bit better! I just read your thread and felt for you all...it' horrible when they're like that. I have to tell you though....don't ever strip them and sponge them. A doctor told me that it's not reccomended anymore.....the only way is to keep them in light clothing and lightly covered...the shivering isn't due to them trying to warm up or cool down but both....they're trying to regulate and so you have to keep their temp as regular as possible.

Will you be taking him to the doctors? I would if only because of his throat...ice lollies are great for sore throats too...is he drinking much?

He looks better this morning than he did yesterday morning but dh is adamant he goes to school. I don't think I will take him to the doctor as there isn't anything they can do imo that I am not doing. I will give him a lolly and I have just asked DD to make him a bottle of water. We are out of milk. As usual no one told me when they opened the last one.

I didn't sponge him down (shit ds1 just been stung by a bee) but dh wiped a damp flannel on his forehead a couple of times.

So DH wants him to got to school? I wouldn't send him....he might be having a good hour...but he could feel terrible later....sore throats are hard to manage when you'renot at home....poor Ds1! Pop some vinegar on the sting!

TheOriginalFAB · 13/07/2011 09:45

Sorry, my mistake DH said keep him off. I wasn't sure but I have and I am glad I did. TBH I need him to got to school tomorrow as I have an appointment at the breast clinic and can't really take him to that. Another quiet day off and he will be okay.

He has just had a fruit pastille lolly for a second breakast and I don't feel bad!
