dd had chicken pox and 2weeks later had another

my 2yr old dd had chicken pox 2weeks ago, they took approx 3days to all blister, then days 6 and7 scabbed over. as i understood it i thought she was no longer infectious so we went out and about as usual. Then yesterday she was incredibly miserable again, and as i wiped her down this morning i noticed a new pox blister had appeared on the bottom of her back. Is this normal? So was she still carrying the virus the week inbetween? wil she have another lot of spots appear? How do i know when she is no longer infectious?

Hi, according to my mum, I had chicken pox as a child but as a grown up, I remember having chicken pox as well. It could have well been shingles I have as an adult. Some insect bites look like pox blisters. My DD has definitely had chicken pox, but intermittently gets a clustering like pox. She was checked and they were actually insect bites, with a tiny puncture wound in centre. She still gets them every so often, but always localized in a cluster.

Is the new one definitely a pox?

I have just seen a GP about DS's chicken pox as we have had to cancel our holiday this weekend because he was still infectious and so not allowed to fly. The GP told me that they are still infectious for a week after the last outbreak of spots, and not as our nursery states 5 days after the rash begins. We were also told that you can get it more than once and so were advised to also not visit DH's grandmother in hospital until 14 days after exposure to make sure that we weren't carrying it into the hospital.

With regards to the latest spot, DD had them 2 weeks a go and she got another blister on her leg about a week after the rest had scabbed up. She is fine now and to say how many spots she had, they have healed very well. I, on the other hand, am climbing the walls having been in the house for the best part of 2 and a half weeks!

Health Protection Agency say 5 days after first spot, it is not just a random nursery decision. As a result I am a little surprised by GP who should be following HPA guidance

I didn't say it was a random nursery decision! I'm only going by what the GP said. 5 days form onset of rash and both of mine still had blisters. They are still contagious until spots have crusted over, so they would have still been contagious after 5 days. DD took 8 days to crust over and we are on day 6 six DS and he still have about 20 blisters therefore is still contagious.

MrsSnaplegs - I hope your DD isn't too poorly with it!

Cicken pox spread primarily by respiratory contact not viral load in blisters (although I wouldn't smear he contents of the blisters over an immunocompromised individual).

You can get chicken pox more than once but most people don't. I've had it several times and it's now dangerous for me as I take immuno suppressants so it's much more serious than most
