how do dentists go about taking young children's teeth out ? will my 4 year old be scared of dentists for life after this ?

My DS is 4 (5 in Oct) and may need to have a tooth out soon, one of the front teeth at the bottom. Basically the tooth turned a pinky red colour and the dentist said for some reason that it has died from the inside. Then a couple of days later it actually broke off when he was eating so now they have fixed a cap type thing over the jagged edge and we are awaiting a dental hospital appointment to advise the best way forward.

The dentist seemed to think that the cap would not last long and that the tooth would need taking out.

I am just a little worried about how they go about this in young children ? My son is very very good at the dentist so far and I am worried that if they come at him with an injection of anaesthetic or anything like that he will be scared of dentists forevermore.

Same thing happened do my dd but she was a little older at 7 (late losing teeth).

The dentist did give her an injection and then loosened the tooth with his fingers, he didn't need a tool to do it as they have no roots.

Our dentist is fantastic with children and she has been back since with no trouble.

If you are going to the dental hospital rather than your own dentist, does it mean he will have a general anaesthetic?

My DD (nine at the time) had four out. She was given a numbing rub on her gum and roof of mouth then a LA. All four came out with no problem and she suffered no ill effects apart from disliking the dental roll and spitting it out on the floor of the supermarket after.
