Coming off Omeprazole?

Am about to try weaning DC2 off omeprazole. He had very bad reflux with apnoea, massive feeding problems and so on which improved at around 14/15 months, now never sick and night cough is gone. He still has frequent irritability and night wakings, unexplained screaming etc. but he does have a lot of viruses which seem to run into each other so I am going to assume reflux is not the cause.

I was previously advised to wean him off slowly by the paediatrician but GP is not sure how slowly and has advised to try half usual dose. Has anyone else tried this? Any other advice on how to proceed and how we will know if it is not working?

Thank you

Hi, we halved DS's dose for about a week. He didn't seem to have any problems with this, so after a week or so, we stopped completely. We watched him closely but luckily the symptoms didn't come back.

Good luck, hope it goes well for you!

I can't advise on HOW to wean off it, only to say how :( I feel for such a little one to be needing/taking it :( - I personally had a vey bad reaction to it, so feel for him even more -

I managed for years with chamomile & spearmint tea with a bit of Manuka honey as I couldn't tolerate the acid suppressants, so that might be something worth thinking about giving him to sip whilst weaning him off the drug - I'm presuming he was tested for Helicobactor Pylori?? certainly worth asking about as its curable -

thanks to a new younger & more on the ball GP - after years of no test - thats what mine actually turned out to be & its apparently very common, I'm on a mix of Anti B's to clear it now -

Anyway, hope someone comes along & answers your question properly, but you/he have my sympathy & hope it goes well for you both & I can recommend the tea Wink

Thanks I'll start with half next week then and see how it goes. Duende do you mind me asking how old DS was when he stopped taking it?

Rockinhippy he had about a billion tests - they found osoephagitis from the reflux and high PH test and floppy larynx but nothing else. Thanks for the tea recommendation - hopefully we won't need it as his symptoms should be gone...

Good luck owlingate hope he does great without it :)

It still might be worthwhile asking about the H.pylori blood test though, I thought I'd had every test going for my own problems - osoephagitis included- I had - bar that one seems from what my new GP said, its common, but underdiagnosed
