Head lag

Hi all

I took my DD2 for her 6 week (although was 7 weeks) check a couple of weeks ago and the doctor pointed out that her head was lagging and wants me to take her back in a couple of weeks to check its improved.

We're 2 weeks down and there hasn't been much improvement. She holds it up for seconds if being held upright but if you lift her up from laying down position it 9 times out of 10 just lays backwards.

I've googled... and seen lots on hypotonia. She doesn't seem to have any of the other symptons e.g. legs and arms straight, floppy etc but just the head lag thing.

I'm hoping she's just late but wondered if anyone else had any experience of this at their check and whether it turned out to be a problem?

Also, she doesn't really gurgle etc - not sure if this is an issue, but obviously could just be late. She was just over 2 weeks early - born by C-section for breech.

Thanks in advance

Do you really mean 6 weeks?

I have never heard of a baby holding their head up at 6 weeks. What are they expecting at 6 weeks. Our first son did not hold his head up properly until close on 6 months. He does, however, have a very big head. If she really does have head lag, you should check that her head is not out of proportion to the rest of her. That does make it hard to hold up.

And, again, gurgling. I am not sure when that kicks in but would not read anything into it at 6 weeks. Does she smile yet?

Yes, 6 weeks.

She's not holding it completely, but when the doctor did the test where she pulled her arms and her head completely hung back below her shoulders which she said should be starting to lift up. She didn't seem overly concerned but wanted to check her again. I've just stupidly started googling and got myself worried!! :)

Her head is out of proportion I think. She was only 5lb 1oz at birth and at the doctors check her height and weight were on the 0.4th centile however the head circumference was on the 25th (I think).

She started smiling at 7 weeks and we tend to get one most days, although its finding the time when she's not tired or hungry which is the challenge! :)

Thank you for the reassurance - its googling which has caused my worry really not the doctor, I think she's just doing her job.
