There is research to show that antibiotics rarely improve the healing of an ear infection. It's not likely to result in hearing loss - keep the ear dry (don't take him swimming or immerse his head in water in the bath, for example). The worst of the pain will be gone now that the eardrum has burst, but treat pain with Calpol/Nurofen. Loud noises are not a problem. The ear drum will heal in a few weeks.

Have a look here for some info

Hope your child feels better soon. Two of my 3 have had burst ear drums, with no problems later.

my DS2 perforated his ear drum a fair few times when he was full of the cold and had snotty noses. Calpol and Neurofen are fine to treat the pain and will also work on the temperature. The ear heals itself and my DS2 has had no problems with his hearing since it happend....

hope you both are feeling better soon

My dd did this when she had an bad ear infection she was 8 months old. The doc said she could get anti-biotics, but as dd was just sleeping lots and calpol was doing its thing, I saw no need to give her them. Eardrum healed in its own time and dd was absolutely fine.
