How do you get a urine sample from a 2yr old?

I am concerned that DD might have either a urine infection or thrush. She has been very sensitive for a while and I saw the doctor who said it looked fine but didn't do any tests. This evening she was holding herself between the legs and saying 'sore' and crying.
I will go back to the doctor tomorrow but thought it might be worth pre-emptively taking a sample with me. I know that it sounds obvious that I should put her on a potty for a sample but she's very resistant to that so far - Can they take a sample from a wet nappy?

Thanks.

Try to give her lots to drink, when you think she may need to wee (err on side of caution), take nappy off and have canister ready to catch wee (you only need a third of a canister). Morning wee is best though. A little messy at first but you will soon get the hang of it. Alternatively put her on a potty and stick hand with canister in potty as well, it is only wee after all.

Thanks for the reply - I guess I'll be keeping her to the hard floors in the morning!!

They can take a sample from the nappym they did for DD.

sallysparrow157 · 18/04/2011 22:48

They can't take a sample from a nappy, they are too absorbent. You can get wee bags that you stick over their bits, the GP should be able to supply, or you can stick some cotton wool balls in the front of the nappy and sort of wring the wee out of them, but neither of these methods give an accurate sample, I'm afraid you're best off chasing her around with a little pot and keeping her off the carpet!!

Sidge · 18/04/2011 22:49

Ask the surgery for a U-Bag - this is a plastic collection bag that sticks over the nappy area to catch the wee.

Samples from nappies aren't usually acceptable as the crystals used for absorbency can contaminate the sample.

fivegomadinthelambingshed · 18/04/2011 22:49

Yes they can.

When DD had a suspected UTI the surgery gave us a special stick on thing to g inside her nappy - can only guess it is what sidge is referring to

You can't take a sample from a nappy. You can dipstick it but it's really unreliable but you can't get a useable sample (I'm a paediatrician, I spend a large percentage of my life attempting to obtain urine from small children)

i was in hospital with dd last week and they couldnt take a sample from a nappy. sat there for 1.5 hours to catch it,she then held it when i put the pot near. nurse said i needed about 40ml in the caught about 20ml and it was enough.

YOu can remove the absorbant padding and crystals from a dry nappy with scissors, just leaving the outer lining. Then insert some dry clean kitchen roll as a pad instead, wait a while for LO to wee, then Squuuuueeeeeeeze :) for a clean sample for testing. (Rec from my GP for the same test)

Hope that helps and your DD feels better soon.

with Ds i sat him on the potty in front of ceebeebies and fed him chocolate buttons Blush, in fairness we had tried the sticky bags twice with no success and he was very very hot!

petitdonkey · 19/04/2011 18:50

Thanks all so much. Can't get an appointment until Thursday so will wait and see what they think. Think potty, cbeebies, chocolate combo might work best for her!!

Good look! I had to get a sample from
Ds when he was about 7 months - it was a nightmare!

soniaweir · 19/04/2011 20:20

we had to do teh same a couple of weeks ago when DS had to do a sample. The doc said to put him in the bath standing up and then turn the tap on and one will come out. It worked for us!s
