Hi I am looking for some advice, my 5 month old baby girl has not been well for nearly a week now. her temp has been really high constantly going between 38.5 and 4.1 degrees sleeping constantly and when not sleeping she is just screaming, which aint like her she such a happy child usually, she not feeding great either cryin though feeds. when she aint sleeping or cryin she is just sitting there staring as if she cant be bothered. I had her at docs last thursday morning told me to continue with calpol even though i had been doing this already and not helping. took her back friday morning seen dif doc and got told to try ibuprofen as well every 4 hours and still not helping so took her to hospital sunday morning and said her chest sounded a bit rough but just continue with what i am doing. there is only so long you can give a child calpol and ibuprofen before it does them damage i am not happy at all they dont seem to know whats up, and aint helping at all. what should I do I dont want them to think I am trying to annoy them taking her all the time but she is in pain even I can see this. Thanks in advance for your help.

TBH, it's sounds like a virus, so not much they can do about it, but don't worry about annoying anyone. If she's not feeding well, take her back to the GP to make sure she's not becoming dehydrated.

You have to act on instinct. If your not happy go to the doctors again. Even if they tell you the same again you have done your best. Never worry about pestering them.

thanks. I thought it was a virus as well the doc said she thought it was a bacterial infection. she has a bit of a cough as well. and i dun some of those self diagnosis things on net and nearlt every one said pneumonia so I think to be honest i have got myself a bit more worried than i should be. her urine has also been dark and really strong smelling but 3 docs and not one has checked to see if dehydrated.

Five months is really young and having high temps for over a week needs attention; dark urine definitely sounds like dehydration

If I were you I would insist on being seen again in the hospital, check for dehydration & possibly need for a drip; they can also do blood tests to see if it is bacterial infection and I would ask for that by now. Obviously she is not getting better, so something needs to be done

hope you get the help you need soon

This overview is helpful to understand what doctors look for in fevers with little ones; from what you say it really sounds like she needs attention

The doc would have given you antibiotics for a bacterial infection surely?
It does sound like either one of those seasonal coldy viruses or teething tbh, which can sometimes make them very off....
I wouldn't tbh, be that concerned as you have been seen by 3 different doctors who have all told you the same...colds and stuff can take weeks to get better, especially when you're that little.
However, the dark urine might mean a urine infection, did you mention that with the doctors?
Is she continuing to feed normally?
38.5 isn't that high (docs don't recommend giving meds until the temp is above that usually) but 41 definitely is.
I'd try to see the doctor again if she is no better today. But stay away from net diagnosis! You can drive yourself doolally with them!
Hope she is feeling better soon!

Missed the bit about her not feeding properly sorry! Yes, it does then sound as if she might be dehydrated.
Get her looked at again, I reckon.

staceyemm · 18/04/2011 08:17

hopsital said looked like bacterial infection and was going to give antibiotics but said she changed her mind as would just make her more sleepy and can make stomach swell as well. I mentiond the dark urine twice and not one of them mentiond it again. she has only been takin 3 ounce of milk in a whole day been trying to get her to take water but she aint interested, took a little bit more this morning bout 4 ounce but cryed all the way through had to more or less force feed her it she screaming when u hold her she just wanting left alone dont want touch straightening legs out as if in pain, and sleeping on and of all day.

Going to wait till she wakes back up to what she is like today to see weather should be taking her back to doctor today.

I'd take her.
SmileGood luck, hope you get some answers today for her.

Samvet · 18/04/2011 09:33

Take her . 3oz in a day will result in dehydration. Doctors are not always right and you have to push.

Sirzy · 18/04/2011 09:40

I would take her back now. I can't believe a dr didnt give antibiotics if they thought it was something bacterical.

Feel the inside of her mouth - is it nice and wet like you would expect? has she had normal amount of wet nappies? if not then definetly take her to A and E.

Let us know how you get on.

ElsieR · 18/04/2011 09:40

You can use Dioralyte fro dehydration. Do hassle doctors and go back. This is not on. And IMO 38.5 is high for a LO.
Good luck.

How is wee one? Mine has had a temperature for 3 days now. Something going around.

staceyemm · 02/05/2011 10:12

sorry took a while to get back on. took her back to dr got sent to hospital was there 4 days on drips and anti biotics for a urine infection ran further tests as she still so young and had a bubble round her kidney caused by a reflux of the urine ( going back to kidney insted of coming out) she has to go for more test including gettin catheter in and a dye flushed through her if this is the problem she will be on anti biotics for years. so glad i took her right back took dr. thanks everyone for advice. x
