Confused about long term lactulose use?

Hi, today the pharmacist advised me against using lactulose every day for my 2.6 yr old dd. He said it was better to use it only for shorter intervals. I'm disappointed because I've been giving my dd one spoon in the morning and another in evening for the past few weeks and it really seems to help. Previously, she was going up to a week with no poo, whereas now we're back to poos every couple of days. Wondered if anyone else has a child who has used lactulose for a period of months or more, and what they think? I've been to my GP twice in past six months as I've been worried about how long dd goes with no poo, but both times haven't had satisfactory result, just been told it's a phase and to focus on diet. We've been pruned up to eyeballs and it still seems to have no affect so I was happy to find a lactulose solution that didn't seem to have long term impact, but no I'm confused... Because I've sort of prescribed the lactulose myself but against doctor's suggestion of sticking with diet solution, I'm worried I might be doing the wrong thing. ps When dd does go, it's generally quite soft and she's not in pain, but it just freaks me out that it seems to be normal for her to do poo only every 4 days or so - can't be right :)

My dd was put on it by the GP and my osteopath said not to use it for a long time as children can get lazy.

My advice would be to stop. Not every child poos every day and is quite normal.

Thanks for that Fab - so maybe my GP was right about not putting him on it unless he's really in pain.
