Seborrhoeic dermatitis and coal tar shampoo

My DS (5) has these big yellow scales on his scalp which Dr Google has diagnosed as seborrhoeic dermatitis. Apparently the way to get rid of it is medicated shampoo with coal tar and all sorts of other things in it, which I'm not keen to do - his skin is very sensitive, he also hates getting his hair washed so if that kind of shampoo gets into his eyes I think I'll have a job getting it on him again!

Anyone got any alternative suggestions?

I have SD and actually I found, much to my surprise, that good old Head and Shoulders is the best thing for me. It does sting in your eyes I'm afraid but then most shampoos do. Bearing in mind coal tar is contra-indicated if you're pregnant I'd be reluctant to use it on a child.

I didn't know that about coal tar Mirth, thanks for the info. Will def avoid then.

Boots own anti-dandruff is the one that works for me - and I've tried loads! Professional and shop bought.

google diagnosed same for my dd, and coal tar was no good - plus she hated the smell. Went to GP and (despite dp's reservations) got a prescription for mild steroids which cleared it right up - she also said use baby shampoo for a bit.

Hers got very sore, and some hair even came out, which was why I went to the GP - if your child's isn't so bad I understand you might not waant to go down the steroid path, but they did work for us.

Proper old fashioned Vosene does the trick.

Well it didn't for dd - but I hope it does for OP!
