I was wondering if anyone's child has undergone corrective ear surgey for prominent ears, and if so what their experience was?

My little boy (who is soon to be nine and therefore not that little anymore) has very prominent ears and has recently started to become very self concious about them; putting his hood up, wearing hats and even walking in to school with his hands covering them. Very difficult to watch a previously very confident and happy little boy lose his confidence.

I have done some inital research in to surgery but would love to make contact with someone who has been through the same thing. Thank you

Mobies, I've not been through this personally but have a friend in her 30's who hates her ears, she really wishes that she'd had surgery as a child
Have you discussed with your GP?

I had it done when I was 10 (So 17 years ago now so things may have changed!)

Like your son I was very self concious about it, I also got bullied a lot of together that put a massive dent in my confidence. I decided I wanted them doing before I went to Secondary school.

I was lucky (in a strange way!) that when I saw the surgeon he noticed another problem that needed immediate surgery so did both operations at once meaning I got to skip up the waiting list and have both done at once.

It was very painful afterwards (but the ward did mess up my medicine so I wasnt getting enough which didn't help!) but the pain didn't last for to long.

I was heavily bandaged for about 2 weeks afterwards, and had dissolving stitches so had no trouble with them. After the inital bandages came off my ears and surrounding areas where very bruised and swollen still and I remember feeling like it had been a failure initially as they didn't warn me of that first.

I had to wear bandages at bedtime for about 6 weeks (I think) afterwards.

I can honestly say having it done was the best decision I have ever made and would recommend it to anyone.
