long term UTI in toddler boy

Hi, my son who is 2 and a half has had a UTI of type proteus since 4 months. His ultrasound scans are fine and now we are looking at possible issues with his kidney functionality. The reason that I'm concerned is because I'm told boys at such young age should not have this type of infection, esp long term and it could possibly be kidney related. His treatment was delayed thanks to the NHS system but we are now in the process and have discovered the potential issue, he is yet to have his kidney test. My concern is any long term damage to his kidneys and I'd just like to know if anyone out there has been in a similar situation with children with long term UTI. Any info, good/bad is welcome. Thanks!!
