Toddler throwing up after gardening

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 24/03/2011 20:41

DD (21 months) and I spent the day gardening today. She did get mucky, and played in the gravel, the soil, the dry leaves etc. She may have put something in her mouth, I have to admit to not being overly vigilant.
This evening she has thrown up twice, really heavily. She is fine and happy in between, but whimpers when she's about to be sick and, well, is. (First time I was holding her. Down my bra, top, jeans, on rug, everything. Never have I been so covered in sick.

As I said, she seems fine, so the plan is to get her cleaned up (again) and put her to bed as normal. I'm just not sure if I should be more concerned, in case she did eat something in the garden. Any advice greatly appreciated. :)

Oh bless you poor thing I find vomiting such a traumatic thing to deal with. I am a huge believer in maternal instincts. Without any medical justification if I were in the same position as you, if I felt things were slowing down I'd see what the morning brings. But if things werent settling it I was worried I'd call the out if hours. If your system is like ours you'll get to speak to a GP who will discuss it with you and most likely give you advice and tell you what are bad signs.

If there's blood in get vomit I'd suggest it's worth a call but that's just me - I'd rather bug someone than sit worrying. Let us know how you get on

Hope you're both asleep and much happier. Hope to hear all is well later.

countrylover · 25/03/2011 08:30

Just to add that my DS1 was playing in the garden one day when he was about 26 months. Within about four hours he was throwing up. He was sick all night but then recovered pretty well the next day. We didn't make the connection until we remembered that his face and hands had been covered in soil so he had probably been putting some of it in his mouth.

And yes, I did feel massively guilty!

I'm sure your DD has probably just put some mud in her mouth and picked something up from there. I hope things have improved this morning.

Moodykat · 25/03/2011 10:21

How is she this morning?

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 25/03/2011 10:39

Stopped throwing up at about 5am, has had a little sleep. High temp, moany and sad this morning.
I've given her Calpol and she's keeping water down.

btw NHS direct called at 1.30am (and woke her!)

Moodykat · 25/03/2011 12:41

Oh bless her. Hope everything is ok. Keep us informed!

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 25/03/2011 13:54

Eating toast now. :)

Still very sad and cling, hot too. Another nap after this toast I think.

sounds awful to say but having a temp is reassuring as it is not likely to be a poisoning issue, just a usual crummy gastro enteritis virus. Poisoning doesnt cause fever.

BonzoDooDah · 25/03/2011 15:17

Sounds like a bug doesn't it. Hope she gets better soon.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 25/03/2011 18:09

She's slept a lot of the afternoon. :)

Still got a temp, and won't drink. Had a sip at about 2pm, nothing since. Is constipated, and has dry lips. I keep offering water but she won't have it. Would juice be ok?

CeliaFate · 25/03/2011 18:11

Give her anything she'll take. Ice lollies are good if she's not keen to drink. Give her Calpol every 3 hours.

toeragsnotriches · 25/03/2011 20:08

My GP always tells me to give whatever fluid they'll drink but diluted. My mum swears by jelly but my two would never eat it.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 26/03/2011 12:04

Still poorly. :(

Temp, moaning and sick a little bit 4 times this morning.

Call docs again or leave it?

vomiting will last 1-2 days and be finished by the 3rd day. If she is still upchucking tomorrow I would see the out of hours doc. Fevers also should be finished by day 3.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 26/03/2011 15:34

It is day 3. :(

Called out of hours, they still say just to keep an eye on her for dehydration.

She managed a bit of orange juice, and is now asleep. :)

HI Loopy - my dd (5) has had a similar thing this week, started with v sudden vomiting mon night, ok for a few hours quite happy then sick every hour or so, all day tues, wed sick less often but stomach cramps & looked dreadful. Took her to gp wed re stomach cramps & diagnosed gastro enteritis. She was sick wed night & thirs mornning, not sick since & perked up last night. Is now eating & drinking a bit but looks awful & feels worn out still. Never had a bug as bad as this & it is scary how sick they are & obv much scarier in a younger one. I was keeping a close eye for dehydration as she wouldn't drink any rehydration stuff or drink much. My dd had been playing in the garden sun & mon & forgot to wash hands before eating so I wondered if that was it but probably more of a bug. My dd2 (9 mths) hasn't had it yet so keeping everything crossed it stays that way. I have a phobia of being sick so worried about the spread of it

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 26/03/2011 18:28

Thank you roundabout. :) Hope she's 100% soon and that your DD2 doesn't get it.

Jemma1111 · 26/03/2011 20:41

Although when poorly kids may not want to drink but the doc told me to syringe water into their mouth atleast every half hour to avoid dehydration

I hope your daughter gets better soon!

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 29/03/2011 23:40

Crikey. Is she still vomiting? Have you taken her to the doctors again? What did they say?

BonzoDooDah · 30/03/2011 00:40

Still ill!? I'd go back to to the Dr! Hope she's keeping some fluids down. Poor girl.
