Toddler throwing up after gardening

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 24/03/2011 20:41

DD (21 months) and I spent the day gardening today. She did get mucky, and played in the gravel, the soil, the dry leaves etc. She may have put something in her mouth, I have to admit to not being overly vigilant.
This evening she has thrown up twice, really heavily. She is fine and happy in between, but whimpers when she's about to be sick and, well, is. (First time I was holding her. Down my bra, top, jeans, on rug, everything. Never have I been so covered in sick.

As I said, she seems fine, so the plan is to get her cleaned up (again) and put her to bed as normal. I'm just not sure if I should be more concerned, in case she did eat something in the garden. Any advice greatly appreciated. :)

I am sure green vomit indicates bile. It only occurs when there is literally nothing left in the stomach.

Colditz' recipe is a good one - try and get her to take it, even if most of it comes back up.

If NHS Direct don't get back to you soon I might be tempted tyo go to A&E/Harmoni.

I hope she improves soon.

harmoni is out of hours doctors.

QuintessentialShadows · 24/03/2011 22:27

poor you, and poor your dd.

It is probably just a very bad stomach bug. Did nhs call you back and ask you to take her to harmoni?

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 24/03/2011 22:28

no call back yet

ring out of hours and see what they say.

Moodykat · 24/03/2011 22:33

I would. Like I said, I've waited for call backs for hours. I think they are trying to phase out NHS Direct and so there aren't so many people there or something.

PaisleyLeaf · 24/03/2011 22:36

Call the out of hours.
Do you know what plants you've got? Foxgloves/comfry etc?

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 24/03/2011 22:37

bit of blood :(

Is she drinking lot of water? At least if she's drinking water it gives her something to wretch against and stops her dehydrating.

Hope the Dr phones soon

BonzoDooDah · 24/03/2011 22:40

and if she IS drinking lots of water maybe lots is making her sick.... get her to sip it in tablespoon amounts so it doesn't shock her stomach.

BonzoDooDah · 24/03/2011 22:42

NHS direct will call back ... sometimes they take an hour ... daughter is breathing okay isn't she?

If she starts to go blue about the lips or anything then call 999 but otherwise - as long as you are sure she's not in a life-threatening state - wait for them to ring. Tortuous though it is .

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 24/03/2011 22:47

A friends DD got salmonella from the garden. Lab analysis tracked the source down to hedgehog poo! Your DD doesnt sound that Ill, but definitely worth checking her out.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 24/03/2011 22:47

welll, that wasa bit useless.. look out for dehydration.

OP posts:
LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 24/03/2011 22:49

breathing fine.

i'm sure she'll be ok, it's just not nice.

Sorry, that wasn't meant to be scare mongering. More informational. Does sound like a bug to me. Could she possibly have an ear infection or the like? Swallowing loads of gunk from that or the like could easily make her sick. Used to happen to me all the time when I was small.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 24/03/2011 22:53

Flat full fat coke in small amounts is quite good for settling the stomach.

BonzoDooDah · 24/03/2011 22:56

Well they're not worried so you should be reassured at least. It's going to be a long night though. Hope you get some sleep.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 24/03/2011 22:56

Thanks :)

Do you put nuts out for the birds? In feeders or on the ground? My ds had a reaction after being in the garden - took us ages to make the connection - twas a nut allergy.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 24/03/2011 23:01

No but there are nut trees. And quince. Lots of plants (incl. a few with berries). Comfrey too. No foxgloves. Lots of cats about too.

TBH if it were me I would take her to out of hours, your never going to get any sleep and its best to get her checked imo.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 24/03/2011 23:12

She's asleep now on my lap. :)
