Question about Medised and other antihistimines?

Medised contains the active igredient Diphenhydramine. According to what I've read on the internet, 'Diphenhydramine drys nasal secretions, by stopping a natural body chemical called histamine from binding to its receptors. Histamine is a chemical produced naturally by the body that has many effects, including the production of allergic symptoms, such as a runny nose. Blocking histamine receptors prevents the actions of histamine, which reduces the production of mucus in the nose'.

My question is, can it be harmful to supress the production of mucus from a cold? Someone mentioned to me once that supressing mucus from a cold, ie phlehm and snot! can push the mucus down to the chest, causing a possible chest infection.

Any doctors out there or indeed anyone who knows anything about this please?

My eldest is now 9 so when I discovered it she had it most time when she had a cold ( you were aloud to give it from 3mths then. I think she was about one year. She has never had a chest infection but has had lots of colds. I only really used it if she was having trouble breathing (she had a dummy) and getting to sleep. I also used a vaporizer. I think sometimes you can know to much about side affects. Each child is different and colds are different. You have to do what you feel is best for your child
