Hoping someone else has experience of this?! My 2yr 8month old just had a sobbing fit about a minor issue but in the midst I noticed (mouth open wide) that hisleft side back molar which has not emerged looks blu/black under the skin. No breakage of the skin at all. I have had some concern about his general health of late and he has had antibiotics for an ear infection on that side - complaining of pain and waking in the night very unhappy. Anyone seen anything like this??! Thanks.x

Is it a bulge? Skin not broken? If so, it is probably an eruption cyst....my dd had one with her first molars...it's reasonably common. Google it and see if it looks like it. Also, check out with your dentist .

Just googled myself for you...

eruption cyst

An eruption cyst (or eruption hematoma) is a swelling over an erupting primary or permanent tooth. It contains fluid that sometimes collects around the erupting tooth. The fluid is often clear, creating a pale colored eruption cyst, but may contain some blood, in which case the cyst is technically called an eruption hematoma. These dark cysts seem to worry parents more, but if your child has one, do not be alarmed. The cyst disappears when the tooth erupts, and no treatment is needed.

You're very welcome, they look awful don't they? Hope they come through soon and don't give your ds too much pain. With my dd her top teeth broke the gum on the eruption cyst and that looked truly awful as it looked like it had burst, but it actually helped the tooth break through, so if that happens don't worry too much.

DS1 had this and when I saw it I was hysterical. It looked terrible, all blue-black and swollen. I took him to the dentist and he said not to worry - sure enough the tooth came through and everything was grand. So DON'T WORRY!!
