What the heck is this rash?

Its Friday night, so of course this is the perfect time for my 14mo dd to develop a rash. NHS direct couldn't help and I can't find anything at all that looks like it on Google. I know its not Chicken Pox as she had that at 4mo so very clued up on what that looks like. Also up to date with Jabs.

So can Mumsnetters help??

She has red patches all over her body including neck, torso, arms, legs & feet. Within those red patches are what look like white blisters. Only other symptom is a runny nose.

Any ideas? This is not my first DC and I've not seen it before, so with google letting me down I'm totally foxed!

Sounds a bit like an allergy - do the blisters follow the shape of the patches?

nenevomito · 18/03/2011 20:55

Yes - there's only blisters on the red patches.
So strange!

Do you have/can you get any baby piriton? I'm sure it's from 12 months but do check

If it's an allergy it should fade, if it isn't one dose shouldn't do much harm (but maybe ask the chemist)

Mmmmm does sound like it could be an allergic reaction.

can you post a picture of it?

has she had anything new to eat today? or touched anything?

orienteerer · 18/03/2011 21:00

Chickenpox?

mumsiepie · 18/03/2011 21:03

So many things it could be but just rememeber it is the non blistering rashes that are dangerous.

Maybe she had something else aged 4 months and has chicken pox now as it is extremely rare for babies to get chicken pox so young.

Hopefully will be gone in the morning! xx

nenevomito · 18/03/2011 21:20

Sure that it was 100% chicken pox when she was 4mo. She got examined by all of the HVs who told me she was too young and BF to get Chicken pox, even though DS had had it 2 weeks previously!

Can you get it again? Not sure on that one.

Will look into baby piriton / posting a pic if she still has it tomorrow. She's asleep at the mo, so best let her lie

Thanks for your help :)

chicken pox wouldn't cause the red patches though,.
generally just a spot with blister on. very distinctive

i've read that if they get it under a year they'r emore likely to get it agian

but it doesn't sound like CP to me tbh and together with the runny nose it hints at allergy...

Pkam · 18/03/2011 21:45

I was told by a GP that if they get chickenpox young, especially while still BF they may not get full immunity to it and therefore may get it a second time. Agree with thisisyesterday though, doesn't sound like CP from your description; maybe more clear tomorrow.

KatyMac · 18/03/2011 21:49

If the blisters are shaped rather than round, I'd go with allergy

I get it with cut grass and some adhesives

KatyMac · 20/03/2011 10:10

How is she?

nenevomito · 20/03/2011 10:18

She seems OK. She still has patches all over her, but not as bad as on friday and now has a horrible cold, so its possibly just the baby habit of coming out in a rash at the slightest thing.

If its not that, the only thing I could think of is that I'd changed fabric softener a couple of weeks ago, so i've been through and washed her stuff in sensitive again to see if that clears it up.

Thanks for asking :)
