my son has a varicocele

my dear son (8) has had a steadily worsening varicocele since the age of 5. this is very rare in boys this age and will need to be operated on at some point. i'm wanting to hear from any mum's whose son or male relation has had this and whether i am worrying unnecessarily, thanks

Sorry, not much help but my DH is waiting on an appointment to see what to do about his varicocele :-(
He has had a kidney scan etc as in older men, kidney problems can be related, but all looks fine so that's on relief, but he is still worried.

thank you for your message, appreciated. my DS had a scan at diagnosis and all was ok then. i've googled it and there's mixed feeling about whether an op helps or not. luckily my DS is in no pain. hope you get an appt soon for your DH

Just found out that my 8 year old son has varicocele too. My urologist seemed to be suggesting that he'd recommend operating, but info on internet doesn't seem to cover children with it, so I can't work out whether op is a good idea or not. Did you find out any more?

We thought DS, 17 had this - from googling, has textbook symptoms. but he's been to GP today who never mentioned it but thinks he 'may have an infection', has prescribed ab's and is sending him for an ultrasound. Will watch this thread as would be interested to hear what the usual treatment is, as it may still be this. Worried as he is joining the RAF in 6 weeks! He has had symptoms for a while but has only just told me, typical male denial!
