Changing hospitals?

(Already posted in SN but I thought I try here too)

Our 7 year old DS4 has been under GOSH since he was 1 week old for renal/urological problems. We live in Northants and it's a real bugger to get to (train/fuel is expensive and the parking is awful).

For that and other reasons (problems with follow up post treatment, cancellations of appointments for which we are dealing with PALS) we would like to change to Birmingham Childrens Hospital. When he was a newborn we were asked to choose between GOSH and Birmingham and we chose GOSH as at that time my sister lived in London which was v helpful when he had surgery, but she's now moved and it doesn't matter.

It also feels like a good time to move as he's due to change Nephrologists at GOSH in April anyway and his condition is also currently stable (on lots of meds, catheters, but will eventually need a kidney transplant.).

Has anyone asked to change hospitals? Is it even possible? In the long run Birmingham makes more sense for us as it's much more accessible which is a big factor with other children to consider and plan for.

Advice anyone?

I think it has changed quite recently - you are now able to request whichever hospital you like. I guess your first port of call is the GP - tell them that going down to London for treatment is not working and you would like to be transferred to Birmingham.

I agree - I am sure you just go to the GP and ask
Sure you know this but driving in Brum is horrid too!

I changed hospitals for my dds care at the start of the year. We changed to GOSH from St Georges. My gp sorted it out. Our move was put down to a second opinion as we had a nightmare with her first hospital. But i'm sure with all the factors (including location) your care can be transferred.
Hope all goes well with your ds x
