Ds 13mths has developed a high temp, bit off food and lethargic 9 days after mmr. Is it likely to be a reaction or would that have happened earlier?

i just got a leaflet about immunisations and it says ' 6 to 10 days after mmr as the measles bit starts to work some children will develop a high temp, a measles like rash and go off food'. this seems to be completely normal so i wouldnt worry.

mrsnich84 · 06/03/2011 19:48

it also says that this happens in 1 in 10 children

He is asleep but temp is 38.5. Could have some calpol. Don't know whether to wake or leave?

Leave. Just have it ready should he wake up in the middle of the night.

winnybella · 06/03/2011 21:40

Oh, and 38.5 is not very high.

ShowOfHands · 06/03/2011 21:41

38.5 is a low grade fever. No thick duvets/blankets, some air circulating and plenty of fluids when he wakes. Calpol if he's uncomfortable when awake.

This is when you'd expect an mmr reaction to occur. It is the measles bit working and might even be considered a good sign. Means it's working.

Got through yesterday, very red faced and moody today. Temp just shot up to 40 so worried again.

When does a high temp after an mmr become a hospital issue

OP posts:
Jacinda · 09/03/2011 02:06

Few days after my DS had MMR he developed high temp that lasted a week. It was hard not to exceed recommended doses of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, as his temp was shooting up to 40 as soon as medicines wore off. We ended up in hospital eventually but the doctors couldn't find anything, got discharged after one night with a bottle of antibiotics 'just in case'.
All that time he seemed reasonably well when temp was down - playing but hardly eating.

mummynumnum · 09/03/2011 18:33

No temp today or so far this eve, so hopefully the worst I past!

My dd had a reaction from days 7-9. Nothing major, slight temperature, constipation, bit grumpy. She was fine after that.

thanks for all the earlier messages. DS developed a post MMR rash at the same time as growing 3 teeth... needless to say he is GRUMPY! taking him to doc tomorrow just to confirm but rash started proper on Saturday and he got jab last Monday. Still managed to chase some pigeons around today so not too worried about him!
