cranial osteopathy

Hi.

My 3 week old baby had cranial osteopathy today as she suffers with tummy pains and makes grunting noises especially at night. They chap said she had tummy trauma, and said we probably wouldn't need to go back...but 2 hours later she is still crunching up in pain. Does this mean it has not worked or can it take longer to heal if at all?

I think all you have discovered is that cranial osteopathy is pseudo-science and doesn't work.

Here is an interesting read from a qualified osteopath, and here is a quick overview of what it is and some of the studies that show that it's useless.

Could your daughter simply have colic?

It worked really well for us, but not for tummy stuff.
DS2 had 5 perforated ear drums in his first 5 months of life. 3 sessions with a c/o and he hasn't had an ear infection since.
we were seeing a bupa ent specialist at the same time and he said he couldn't explain the difference and didn't feel comfortable attributing it to c/o but in 3 sessions he coud see that ds2 no longer had a problem that he felt needed to be fixed.

as I said I have no idea about the tummy stuff. sorry!!

I believe it works, and take my children to a cranial osteopath regularly, I would suggest that you call and ask his advice.

I know people who swear by crystal therapy but it doesn't stop it being woo-woo nonsense.

But, hey, it's your baby. Do whatever you feel is best.

FWIW I really rate cranial-osteo for babies and small children. Mine literally released DD4 arms which she had hardly moved for her first few months and her limited movement was delaying her development. By the time we left his office she was swinging her arms; something she could never have done before.

I would stick with it but also incorporate some baby massage at bedtime with clockwise massage on her tummy.Try Peter Walker books/dvd.

Also a warm bath, even lying on your tummy in the bath can help them relax. This can be lovely as you can make it deeper and just support them in the water so they can float.

She's only 3 weeks old and it can take a bit of time to get used to the outside world and getting bf established etc.

I took my 15 week old daughter to a cranial osteopath on Monday for reflux, but since then she has been holding her head on both sides near her ears and really crying, as if she's in pain is this normal and will things get better in time? She's due for another session next week but I'm wondering whether I should take her or not?

My dd2 had CO for her neck when she was tiny. It took a good month or 2 before it really started to have an effect. Keep at it though, its amazing how well it worked.

It can take time to work. If she's still not better I would try another appointment. You'll get people who are adamant it does work. Some of these won't even have been near a cranial osteopath, or don't realise that not everything works 100% of the time for 100% of people.

In my experience it has helped my child. It is indisputable what was found and achieved but I'll get people who don't know my child telling me I am deluded.

My son would sleep a lot after treatments and also was known to get various things out of his system when treated for something different.

Snorbs, the overview you've linked to is for craniosacral therapy which is different to cranial osteopathy.

Cranial osteopathy is conducted by osteopaths. As others have said, many people report good results from this treatment which uses gentle manipulation of the bones in order to correct any misalignments caused by pregnancy and birth.
