Infected finger

Needs advice here. Dd told me on Monday she had a splinter. I looked and could see nothing, however by wednesday am she had a visible line of pus along a splinter tract. I coulod see a tiny splinter and tried to remove it, thought I had, and whilst doing, the pus came out. Covered it to keep it clean. looked ok this morning, but as I got her readu for bed and removed today's plaster, probably 50% of end of her finger is now covered by pus under the skin. I have put her into bed, with dose of anti imflam, she has no temperature. I am thinking gp in the morning, because she will need anti bios, what do you think, will they needs to lance it at the hospital?

Thank you. I am so glad it is common. I hear myself saying to the dc all the time "I have to take it out else it will get infected" now am feeling so bad I didn't spot how bad this was earlier today. It will wait until tomorrow though will it? You don't think I should wake her up and take her somewhere tonight? She is asleep already, no sign of temp.

Chill - if she has no fever it's a localised infection, oral antibiotics will probably be prescribed - you can look forward to the yellow peril of Amoxycillin suspension (do not spill it on your clothes, it never comes out!)

I think fine to wait but do get it seen tomorrow - my BIL got admitted to hospital for 3 days because of an infected finger which he left for too long

My daughter had it not too long ago, were told to bath it in hot water daily and then cover it in a bandage with I think it was iodine or similar, took a bit over a week then it was ok. She did lose her nail though because of the infection getting trapped underneath but it has grown back normally now.

If she develops red lines (veins tracking), flu like symptoms or confusion, go urgently to get antibiotics btw.

Thank you so much, I will keep on checking on her and make sure she doesn't get a fever, and watch out for red lines. I will ring the surgery at 8.00 tomorrow, should be able to get her into gp children's clinic at 12.30.

Trying to chill now after your reassuring advice, I promise. Have spent all day at hospital with ds, various clinics for ongoing medical problem, and now feeling so guilty that dd1 "slipped through the net a bit", I guess not that uncommon for a sibling of a dc with a physical disability. Doesn't make it ok though.

i ended up in a&e getting hers seen to as she had trouble moving it.

we were also advised to bathe in warm water and savlon. a wweks worth of anti b's aswell.

hope she feels better soon.

I have a picture on my profile of my arm mouse which appeared as a result of a teeny tiny splinter in my finger, overnight.

And it is an mouse! That appeared overnight from a splinter in your hand....good god, will go and pull up her pj sleeve now!!

It's to do with the lymph glands - the nearest one to the injury site swells. It took a good three weeks to go down (and a lot of antibiotics).

I assume you are all right now whomoved and not typing one handed, after hand, arm and mouse amputation?

Oh yes, absolutely fine thanks. I normally react like that to splinters. I just have to be a bit more careful than the average person when thrusting my hand into the christmas decoration box

Thank you. I have just checked on her again. No temperature, she is lovely and cool, sleeping peacefully, no raised lymph glands in neck anyway, difficult to check on her arm at the mo, she is lying on that side.

Back from the gp. The nurse lanced it and has put a dressing on to draw out the pus, and given her a week of antibios.....lovely yellow peril of Amoxycillin suspension, who moved .

Thanks everyone for your advice. Fingers crossed this will knock it on the head, and that the splinter has "washed out"
