Help - I think my pfb has a cold and I am freaking out.

Ds is 4 weeks old and has a stuffy nose and makes horrible snotty noises at the back of his throat and coughs occasionally. He is ebf but seems to only want to feed a little at a time and then goes back to sleep, he has also been sick after a couple of his feeds but does not seem to be sang for any more. I think he finds feeding harder as his nose is blocked and he struggles to breath. I have used saline drops and the audit adoptable thing.

I spoke to the triage nurse at the gps but she did not think he needed an appointment and was highly amused at me and said "this is obviously your first baby! ", but I am still concerned, mainly because of the short feeds and sickness,a nd also about how this will affect my milk supply. How long will the stuffiness go on for and is there anything else I can do?

Is he having wet nappies regulary?

When you say he is struggling to breath do you mean just in a snotty blocked nose way or properly struggling? When he breaths does his chest pull in under his ribs?

If his nappies and chest are normal I would TRY not to worry to much (easier said than done I know!) otherwise I would want to get him checked over.

Yes if no fever and no struggling to breath as per sirzy post, I wouldn't worry. Offer bf regularly. It'll probably last a week-as most colds do.

Moulesfrites · 21/02/2011 14:11

Yes, wet nappies and just blocked nose, not struggling like you have described. Thanks

you could put a wet towel or bowl of water on radiator to gently hydrate the air in the room. Frequent feeds help clear blocked nose. Sleeping upright on your chest also helps. Also wrap him up and take him out in pram, the fresh air also seem to help clear nose etc

Yep, 7 days and then fine

Not sure if ytou can use Karvol on newborns but why not speak to pharmacist?

Propping the head of the moses basket up helps at night. I let DS nap in his bouncer chair when he had a cold at a similar age.

Thanks everyone. He has fed just now for a decent length of time but then was sick again - that is the third time today. He is also sleepy but then he is only 4 weeks and sleeps a lot anyway - do you think I should worry about this?

Get some saline solution from the chemist. Works a treat to unblock the nose and then he can feed better...

RockyAddict · 22/02/2011 09:39

He's probably sicking up because he's swallowed mucus. Have a check in his sick (nice...)

Dear PFB Mum

What you are feeling is that normal panic that comes alongside your baby's first cold - this is natural

What you need to keep in your mind is it's a cold, he'll get over it and it's no big deal

yes he will be snuffly and snorty, yes he will vomit after feeds (it's the snot) he may even have a bit of a temp (to help him fight the bug)

It's all good - his immune system is working as it should

FYI breastmilk also has great anti-biotic properties and you can use it up noses to clear snot and in eyes to clear gunk (seriously you can and no I'm not a new-ager)

In a few years time you'll look back and feel fond for yourself and your panic

it is proof that you have bonded beautifully

now stop worrying let him sleep feed a little at a time and do not worry

all sounds fine
