Amoxycillin rash

mrjohn · 18/02/2011 19:24

My little boy has been on Amoxycillin since Wednesday and has since developed a red raised rash on his legs and arms and back

Def not meningeal rash, def not anaphylactic reaction to antibiotics but wondered if it was a skin reaction to the Amoxycillin?

People who have seen it say it looks quite eczema like. Not had probs with eczema before. Doesn't seem to bother him until he gets hot, then he becomes quite upset.

Any advice gratefully recieved

I get the same reaction to amoxycillin, it does sound like an allergy.

I was a child when it happened and I think my mum just took me back to the GP and they gave me something else.

I declare it as an allergy now in hospital etc.

I had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin when I was about 20. It appeared a bit like a nettle rash all over my body. The only thing that helped was a cold shower.
I had a similar but more severe reaction a few years later and was taken to A&E, put in a side room because they thought it was a nasty infectious disease! However the thinking was that I had eaten some meat that had been given amoxicillin or similar. When it happened the second time my fingers became swollen & my ankles too.

i get this aswell. Its a mild reaction to the anti biotic. Problems arise because something that is usually mild can sometimes cause a large reaction unexpectedly, so thats why it needs flagging with the doctor.

Yes, penicillin allergy. Needs GP to make a note of it in the records, and alternative antibiotic next time or the reaction may be much more severe.
