Does this sound like a sprain ?

DD1 (9) took a bad tumble yesterday. Wrist is very tender and hand/fingers are quite swollen. Seems to be generally very uncomfortable rather than extremely painful. And there is no bruising.
I iced it and strapped it, and only needed to give pain medication last night.
It is still strapped today, and she is avoiding using it. But there have been no complaints of pain.

Does this sound like a sprain, and should I be Ok to avoid GP visit unless it gets painful?

I'm second guessing myself here.

It does sound like a sprain IM (limited) E.

If she's been troubled by it tomorrow I would be tempted to head down to MInor Injuries Unit just to be on safe side

Thanks CameronCook. She says it doesn't feel so bad today.

I 2nd minor injuries - usually quicker and they can x ray if they think it needs it.

I'm sure I've heard before theres an idication with swelling/bruising and pain being local or widespread which indicates break v sprain. May be worth googling??

Don't want to worry you but I had a 'sore' swollen ankle I walked on for a week before we discovered it was a chipped bone. Grin

Thanks mumbar. I googled it. It certaintly isn't a broken wrist from what I'm reading. Only thing is there are so many other small bones in the hand that it could be..
Her hand and fingers are discolored a bit (kind of mottled/reddish), thought not bruised. And it is still quite swollen.

Poor DD, it is not a good weekend for her. She fell again today and banged it again!

MCos I would get it checked out tomorrow - poor DD bumping it again

AnyFucker · 13/02/2011 19:54

You should get it Xrayed

I can't undersand why you haven't, tbh

Pain is not "normal"

Bruising is not "normal" and not often associated with a sprain of the upper limb

If she is guarding it, there is something wrong

Maybe it is a sprain...I would want to know for sure though

Hi Emcos. Hows DD today?

Don't want to sound alarmist but I would be concerned about the mottelling - it could be an indication the circulation is not quite right?

MCos · 15/02/2011 22:16

Update: (sorry, work got busy and I forgot to update earlier)

She is totally fine now, swelling is gone and is able to do 20 mins violin practice without complaint.
I think I might have wrapped the support bandage too tight, and that might have been cause of the mottelling?

I probably should have had an X-ray, but with the long waits in A&E, I decided to wait until I could see a GP on Monday. I'm in Ireland, I don't have access to a Minor Injuries clinic. Thankfully, I didn't even need GP visit.
