What can I do to help sicky DS (16mo) (long - sorry!)

This could be long...

I considered calling NHS 24 for out of hours advice today, but as DS doesn't have a temperature and seems quite happy for now I am going to wait and see but would like any advice you can think of!

He had a virus about 3 weeks ago, which started with him vomiting a few times over a couple of days. He was then sleepy and off his food for a bit, had high temp on and off. We took him to the (very nice) doc who advised regular Calpol to keep his temp down and said his ears and throat were red so that would be why he was a bit distressed. He has been kept hydrated ok as he will take a fair bit of water and normally has 2-3 breastfeeds a day. He has fed a bit more on days where he didn't eat

After a couple of days of Calpol, he seemed a lot better and was almost back to eating normally . He has been waking up in the early hours since a day or 2 before he started being sick. Once he was feeling a bit better, he was asking for extra food at 5 am most days!

He then started waking up with a high temperature again and had a runny nose. This developed into a cough and he sounded quite wheezy for a couple of days. All the while he was happy, so I didn't take him back to the doctors, gave Calpol.

Cough seemed to get better, then he was suddenly sick again a couple of days ago after refusing lunch (and dinner the night before).

He was then sick again the following morning, we were struggling to know what to do so trooped off to doctor's again. Got a slightly more businesslike one this time. DS chest was apparently clear, ears and throat red. Doc gave him antibiotics for him on this basis.

Today while I was at work he had a massive sickness and simultaneous diahorrea :(

He is now happy as Larry again after a bath. He wants lots of cuddles and wanted a bf when I got home.

While he has been not well we have pretty much let him eat what he wants, just to get some food into him. This has included yoghurt(obsesses with this and asks for it all the time) , rice pudding, some Ella's kitchen fruit and veg type pouches which he normally occasionally has as a snack. (not at 5 am though).

I am assuming he's just had bad luck to just pick up one bug before he's really recovered much from the first one. He doesn't seem seriously unwell.

I am wondering if today sickness/runny nappy explosion has been due to the antibiotics.

I am on holiday from work for the next couple of days so am planning to just let him bf lots and drink water lots and maybe only offer food if he 'asks' by pointing at the fridge/cupboards.

Any advice on what to feed him and reassurance that he will get back to eating normally eventually! It feels like he's been ill for ages not 2 or 3 weeks.

Hi, when my 13 month old was poorly & off food I went to see my GP & she said she wasn't worried about him going without food as long as he was taking several bf through the day. This put my mind at rest as I was worried he would fade away!

thanks for that reassurance, i have been really glad of the bf actually. just wish i didn't work full time!

the very nice doctor did say we'd done a good job of keeping him hydrated. :)

hi, ive had near enough exactly the same thing as you, well, my dd has. Had an ear infection about 3 weeks ago and ad anti biotics for that that finished a week last wed, then thursday she starts throwing up/couldnt keep anything down. Took her to the docs on frday even though she was starting to pick up but she was reacting badly to the light and i panicked!! Then after we gave her the anti biotics on the friday night she got progressively worse and hadnt eaten since the thursday. I stopped the antibiotics yets and she has picked up lots, I think her throat is a bit raspy but she has started eating again and the explosive nappies have stopped thankfully. It was awful, we were having to change her pjs 3 or 4 times a night :(
So basically, what im trying to say is maybe the dodgy tummy is a side effect of the anti biotics, im not of course recommending you stop giving them!
