Cough when lying down?

My DDs have yet another chest infection but this time as soon as they lie down they go into sparodic coughing fits that last hours. Neither have slept much in the last 24 hrs and are both tired and feeling sorry for themselves. I'm using over the counter cough medicine but its doing nothing but i don't want to drag them to the docs just to be told its a winter bug and all parents worry yet again. Any suggestions on how to ease the coughing fits so the poor babies can get some sleep? Thanks

Agree - my DS had what I thought was an irritating cough when lying down, and it turned out he had a bad chest infection. After a fortnight of antibiotics it's still pretty bad - I wish I'd thought to see the GP sooner.

Are you sure it isn't croup, is their breathing noisy or rattly, particularly when lying down? DS had it in December and needed antibiotics, I was also told not to give him cough syrup which is why I wanted to check.

Anyway, try putting a pillow under the mattress or raising the cot up so that they're not lying flat, and put damp clothes or towels on the radiator to keep the air moist. A hot bath may also help.
