How long is normal?

Someone told me that is is quite usual for a child to have a cough lasting up to six weeks following a cold. Is this true?

There is no wheezing or shortness of breath, just a horrible irritating chesty sounding cough that is usually worse in the mornings after he gets up. He is well in himself, eating, playing as usual, his only symptom is the cough.

I'm loathed to take him to the docs because he is not ill. I'm assuming if it was a chest infection or something more sinister then he'd be showing signs of being poorly, not launching himself around the room singing along to Michael Jackson and requesting a biscuit? He is 5yo by the way.

i am not sure- but i do know that children do get post viral coughs and nasal drip coughs that can last for weeks. does he bring up any phlegm?

No, it sounds chesty and loose but he is unable to bring up any phlegm - he just swallows it again (yuk) even though I encourage him to spit it out.

It doesn't help that he still can't really blow his nose properly and favours sniffing it back up and swallowing (yuk yuk yuk)
