On a different (non-baby) forum, there is a person with a reletive who is currently giving there under 2 yr old Benylin 6yrs+ to help the baby sleep at night.

The response from said relative to that they should not be doing that is that "they can't see it will do any harm and the child to sleep".

To give said person some ammunition, what would be the health implications of giving their child Benylin 6+?

potential overdose. It depends what's in the benylin.

Apparently its the Red "Guaifenesin" one.

I've no idea what the ingredients are. Tyxylix is really nasty if a child takes too much.

A dose for a child over 6 given to a 2 year old is really stupid. Their bodies are half the size so the dose is double if this makes sense.

Guafenesin can cause allergic reactions, respiratory suppression and hallucinations in children under 6.

You could refer them to this link

thanks!

I'll send them those links. Unfortunately said relative is likely to continue on regardless.

I wouldnt recommend giving a 2 yr old medicine only recommended for a 6+ yr old. Not a good idea at all.

Guafenesin? To help a baby sleep? Confused I thought that was an expectorant? IME it makes children cough, not sleep!

Are you sure its not the Benelyn 'night coughs' one which is an antihistamine, the same as the one in Medised? If it IS, I hope they're not giving the poor baby a 6 year old dose...
