Chemotherapy - hospital visit

Tomorrow I am due to visit a friend who is staying with her 8-year old DS whilst he begins a course of chemotherapy. Tomorrow will be his 3rd day.

I know I can't change their situation, but would like to be supportive.

Please can anyone suggest a suitable gift to take for the little boy - is there anything at all that would be useful, interesting etc, even if only for a short while?

what about a small jigsaw or see if he has a dvd player in his room and ask what dvd he would like or what he is into so you can buy him one to watch, i would also take some snacks for your friend, when i stayed in hospital with my ds for a week i had to buy my own food,

also give her a quick call to see if there is anything she wants bringing from home or even suggest you can take some washing home with you to do, the little things make all the difference

I would have killed for a flask of decent coffee and something nice to eat. A new magazine or book and a newspaper would have been gratefully received too

Chemotherapy is exhausting so anything that you bring for her son might not have an immediate impact. My ds loved little Lego sets and got extremely good at them very quickly.

I used to have a cleaning bag with me which contained dettox, kitchen paper and a bleach block for the toilet in our room.

audiobooks are quite good when you are on chemo - because often you are too tired to read or sit up and look at a DVD, - with a story CD you can just lie back and listen with your eyes closed. (Has he got anything like an MP3 player, or little CD player and earphones to listen with?)

Thanks for all these ideas, which I will follow up.
