Hi all,
DD2 a week old today and has just had a visit from MW. She noted that her belly button protrudes a little too much and had mentioned that she may have a little umbilical hernia.
Sad
She has removed the clip but the scab remains at present. Once it has fallen off her belly button may retract a little apparently? But I'm concerned about what happens if it doesn't!
Anybody have any experience of this? Confused

My ds had this, it was very noticeable. I was really worried but it just sorts itself out, I saw a surgeon on an unrelated matter and asked him about it and he told me that is causes no discomfort and if it was there still at 3yo they could operate but it would purely be for cosmetic purposes. It sorted itself out in a few months. Try not to worry honestly :)

Yes, ds2 had this and I was told by the dr and midwife that over 90% resolve themselves, something to do with the stomach muscles getting stronger as they move more and learn to sit up. Ds is now 3 months, and one day I noticed that it was no longer sticking out. Apparently if they are not resolved by around 2 years they can operate, but the op is minor and they should be up and around in a few days (midwife actually had a son who had it done and she said he was fine the next day).

One of my twins had this and it appeared when she was about 12 weeks old (they were 7 week prem). When I mentioned it to the nurse practitioner at the hospital at a routine check up, she said that she has never seen one that didn't correct itself at some point.

As dt1 got a bit bigger and her stomach muscles got stronger the hernia disappeared and her belly button now looks totally normal. It took about 6 months or so to go completely.

my son has has it since birth and doctors have constantly told me it will be fine! He is now nearly 5 and it has just started to retract and has never caused him any problems! I wouldn't worry.

Both of my children have had this. DS was much more noticeable than DD.

The stats are something like 95% resolve by 3 years old and 98% by 5 years old. (not exact)

When I saw the doctor about each of them, they told me to bring them back aged 2 if it was still there. DS's was, but getting smaller. They have both resolved now and they just have outy navels.

You should watch out for the hernia being firm and swollen when the child is at rest (not crying as they go firm anyway) as this could mean that there is a problem.

Thanks all. Been discharged from midwife this afternoon, belly button scab still hasn't fallen off so we're waiting to see what happens...HV coming wednesday so we'll see what she thinks but I'm thankfully no longer concerned based on your replies Grin
