Anyone's DC had a filling..?

Dentist says DS needs a small filling and he's understandably nervous. Dentist was hugely reassuring and said it will be quick, no injection and minimal, but then he was listening so she could have been overplaying it..!

DD1 hd to have a small one last year at 6yrs old, she was fine, no injection, and it was quick.

She said it didnt hurt, but she was terrified of being in the chair!

That's what I'm worried about - actually getting him into the chair and opening his mouth!! DS is 6 too. I feel lousy about it - dentist said it's all the dried fruit he eats. I was giving it to him because I thought it was good for him.

Did it take long DanJARMouse?

Ask about fissure sealing. My 2 had this done at a young age and they were filling free for many years.
DD at 5 though had to have an injection to remove a sliver of broken tooth that had lodged in the gum. She refused the whiff of gas and CHOSE the injection! I was so proud of that little girl

But if he got in the chair already, you should be alright on that score. My oldest had the sealing done but needed a small filling sometime later. This was a 'just in case' measure, so the tooth would be ok until she looses it. It is not the same as it was when we were young. No injections, no drills. They just blast any spots out with high pressure air and then fill. You would not even see it in the tooth.

I made a big deal of getting in a chair that moves! And the dentist is justing counting the teeth and making sure there are no elephants and giraffes hiding in the back of the mouth!

Mminie, I think you're right about projecting. Hard not to as I do so remember those big scary needles coming at me from an early age. I think he'll be okay, it's just that he broke down in tears when the dentist said he needed a filling - she wanted to do it there and then, but he was bordering on hysterical so she backed off. Will get there somehow am sure. Just wanted to find out a bit more so I can tell him it'll be next to nothing.

Hi, sorry did not pick up on the bit about him being nervous already. I guess best advice is to make light of it. You could try the library for a book? I know Usborne do a book about the dentist in their First Experiences range. And I've seen a Dora book about a visit to the dentist too (she got a filling)

Im terrified, and DD1 did really well.

The dentist made a game out of the air sucker/blower thing and she was ok.

For what was a few minutes discomfort (in not wanting to be there!) she was fine and hasnt had a problem since.

DD had a teeny pink filling aged 4 (raisins to blame apparently). No injections, just a little buzzy drill which the dentist demonstrated on her hand she was fine.
now fissure sealed.

Raisins etc are full of sugar and get stuck in teeth which causes decay. Diet issues are a minefield I'm afraid. Hope all was sorted in the end.

Thanks Dentistnot. He's not having the filling for a couple of weeks, but I have now dramatically cut back on the amount of dried fruit in his diet..

My DD also has had a couple. Fruit juice and fruit here. Just as bad as sweets so i am told. Dentist advised the fillings as if we left them they may progress and then require injection etc.

Literally a spray with air jet to clean and then filled. Took under a min. Not even sure i would call it a filling as so small.

Makes the parent feel crap though.
