She's been quiet and pale for a couple of days (she's 5) she complained of ear ache so after taking her to the GP they put her on amoxycilin, but i have picked her up from her dads about 2 hours ago and as she undressed to get in the bath i noticed her tummy, chest and shoulder area and her back have lots of big(ish) red spots, she has one or two on her arms too. She said she feels ok, and they arent hurting or itchy or anything, she's still a little pale and quiet but seems ok other then that, i have no idea what it could be, but id have thought the obvious would be chicken pox, has anyone got chicken pox experience??? TIA x

Does she have a fever or cold symptoms? Tend to get those at the beginning of CP

If lots more spots tomorrow and starting to blister, then maybe...

But she has just started antibiotics and now she has a rash, so I would speak to the OOH GP for some advice really.

Has she had antibiotics before with no reaction? I'm no expert but I personally wouldn't give her the antibiotics again until you have spoken to a doctor and seen what the spots look like in the morning, in case it is a reaction to the medicine. Sounds quite likely that it could be chicken pox though. In the morning there will probably be more spots, and the first ones may look bigger and be more fluid filled.

she has had antibiotics before with no reaction, she started on them last night at about 6pm, im going to call nhs line i think just to be sure, but she has been pale and a bit 'off' for a couple of days so im hoping that it is just chicken pox as i expect a reaction to AB's would be much more problematic?? Is it common for them to be a little poorly before spots?? She hasnt been feverish really, just tired, quiet, pale etc maybe its just a minor dose of CP???

Yep definitely common for them not to be 100% for a couple of days before the spots. If she was like it before the antibiotics then I reckon you are on the right lines with chicken pox. If the spots came out today, she would have been most contagious on Thursday and Friday. If you have been in contact with any pregnant women who may not be immune, it might be worth letting them know, once you have spoken to NHS direct to be sure.

FWIW Both of my dds had CP last year and neither was particularly poorly, just very spotty. I think we got off lightly and hopefully your dd will too.

amerryscot · 22/01/2011 21:09

CP has very obvious pus-filled pox in characteristic areas. If you don't have any of these (not even one), you don't have CP.

My DD had a very mild case of CP when she was 5 months old, with only two pox. She was not unwell at all. We suspected CP because her brother had come out with it two weeks early, with far more pox, but still mild. My three children that have had CP were all well through it. They didn't even need calamine lotion.

If a child has a temperature, it is quite common to have a non-descript rash. It could be anything.

I seem to remember they became pus-filled after a day or so though - I don't think they were all pus-filled to start with. It may be clearer in the morning.

Thanks everyone, trying not to worry, im not much of a worrier (sp?) but im on my own with my dc's and its hard when you havent got someone to share it with/help out. To the best of my knowledge she hasnt been near any pregnant women, but i'll check. Cant really think of anyone she's been near with chicken pox though either!

the evening she said she had a headache and tummy ache..Thursday she had about 10 spots, small red ones and a temperature.
Friday got much more spots.Today she has spots everywhere including in her genitals and very itchy and distressed.
