Skin problem in 6 year old

Does anyone know what could be causing the following symptoms in DD, she is 6 years. Or has anyone else experienced anything like this:
About a year ago, she started getting sores on her face ? usually around her mouth but they do appear on her forehead and bridge of her nose, she has had one on her throat also. She will go to bed with clear skin and then in the morning have a horrible red sore on her face. Or, she will go to school with nothing and when I go to pick her up ? have a really bad red sore on her face. The sores take ages to heal. The only thing that seems to clear them up is metanium nappy rash cream. No other creams that have been prescribed to her have worked and have actually made the sores worst!!
Dr originally diagnosed impetigo (which I knew it wasn?t), until that was ruled out by swab. Have been to see dermatology consultant at children?s hospital armed with photo?s of her skin during bad outbreaks at different stages. He could not tell me what is causing it, but believes something is causing her skin to itch so she scratches ? causing these sores. He thought it unlikely to be washing powder/bath wash or anything like that because it is only happening on her face. I am now not putting anything in the bath and have switched to white toothpaste with no colours my washing powder has never changed. Consultant gave us some cream he thought may prevent outbreaks ? however after all these measures - sores are still appearing!! I now cut her finger nails every couple of days to prevent her scratching being so damaging.
I am unsure of what to do next ? maybe have a skin allergy test? Starting to wonder - could it be something she does out-of-habit ? sort of subconscious or even in her sleep????
Would really appreciate any advice, or similar experiences (and how you tackled it).
Sorry for length of post!
Thank you in anticipation!

Iwould see here at it though...and managed t nag her out of the habit.

Seems odd that your DDs areon mouth bridge of nose and forehead...have you asked her teachers if she scratches?

Wimple,
thanks for reply - I have seen her scratching a few times but she usually does it overnight ? or at least I think she does as sores appear overnight . Will ask teachers.
The consultant thought she may be allergic to something she is eating - (as it is predominantly around her mouth and/or on her face), or toothpaste ? hence why I changed to one he recommended.
Really want to get to the bottom of it!
