I'm pretty sure DD (3) has chicken pox atm. She's not got many spots, but the spots she has are red-based blisters filled with clear serum, and she's got a slight fever and cold symptoms. My question is this. I don't think I've had it. How long will I have to wait until I know if I'm in the clear? I know it's really contagious, so given she's slept with me the last two weeks, would I be ok if I don't develop any symptoms within the next 3 weeks, or would it be 3 weeks from the end of her illness?
Oh and the same goes for DS too. How long should I quarantine him for? He spends about 8 hours a day in very close contact with her, so he's bound to get it. He's got a hospital appointment on Mon. I should cancel that, right?

slept with me the last two nights. Not weeks.

the incuabtion period is 10-21 days and your dd would have been contagious from 1-2 days before the spots appear until they scab over which is normally 5-7 days after they start to appear. I wouldnt quarantine your ds unless he starts to show symptoms as there is no guarantee he will actually catch them.

Unless your ds has some underlying medical condition then i would just let him get it - then you have it over and done with. Chances are he may have caught it from the same place too. All 3 of mine went down with it within 24-48 hours of the first showing any signs.

Bicarb of soda in the bath can help reducing the itching. Socks on hands at night helps reduce the scratching!

You should probably cancel the hospital appointment.

If you don't get any symptoms in the next 3 weeks then you should be fine - it seems to show up within about 2 weeks normally.

Thanks guys. I was just going to let him get it - he'd do better to have the immunity than otherwise I think, and he's a really healthy kid normally. I was just more worried about the chances of him passing it on to other kids or vulnerable adults - he spends a lot of time around babies and pregnant women, so was wondering whether it'd be wiser to keep him away from them for now, for their sakes rather than his, even though he's not obviously infectious, given that we must have picked it up from a not obviously infectious person ourselves.
I'm more worried about me, tbh, callous though that sounds. I've a really REALLY important audition coming up in about 6 weeks, and I don't need to be ill right on top of it.
Thanks for the bicarb tip.
