Urinary tract infections in boys

My son (4.5 yrs) has been horribly ill with a urinary tract infection since Saturday. He has been in agony every time he wees, and has been weeing all the time. He is now recovering (on his second set of antibiotics) but our GP was unable to give any idea about how he got the infection. Does anyone know how boys get UTIs? I would like to avoid him ever getting one again. Thanks in advance.

Don't know the answer (so bump) but just wanted to say get some probiotics capsules or sachets for him to counter the anti b's.

It's relatively unusual for boys to get them, I think a lot of GPs offer a referral to check they kidney and pipework are in good working order.

Girls much more prone to them due to anatomy - ie the urethra being so close to the anus basically as many UTIs are caused by bacteria from the bowel getting in the wrong place.

He should be having a renal ultrasound at the very least to investigate and check for scarring. See your Gp and insist, it is NICE guidelines and your GP is being very slack.

Oops sorry, just read not 2nd uti just 2nd set of antibiotics. Even so, boys should be investigated and many trusts are scanning after 1 uti in boys and girls.
