Hi there,

My 14 week old has got a cold and a cough. i'm worried as researh says there's links to these types of viruses and cot deaths..
I am also worried as her nose is blocked and my freinds baby stopped breathing because of this. Does any one have any tips on how i can unblock it? And generally get her better asap. She is breastfed btw.

Thanks so much!

Hi rosierosa x

Sorry to hear your lo is feeling bunged up - my lo had her first cold at 9 days old, I felt dreadful at the time! She's had another one since and currently has a cough and is only 7 months old! - if only we could wrap them in a little bubble! lol.

The things I found worked were;

Saline drops - available from chemist, were amazing at clearing her blocked nose, can be used regularly throughout the day but was good to use before feeding her
Tilting moses basket stand or placing a rolled up towel under the mattresss so that lo wasn't completely flat helped her breathing

I found the "snot suckers" you can get in the chemist a bit rubbish tbh, but I've read other people say they found them handy - it's basically a little sucker you pop up their nose! lol.

You could also give her calpol now at 14 weeks too? This may help stave off the risk of her temperature rising and her being feverish. I would check with the chemist as to whether you can use cough medicine alongside calpol, they might suggest a better medicine or just tell you to stick with calpol alone.

Hope lo gets better soon honey xx

Steam is good to clear the chest and tilting the head of the cot/moses basket when she is sleeping.

Hope she is better soon x

You're welcome, look after yourself too and dose up on some good old vitamin C - the last thing you need is to feel ill as well! xx
