Eleven month old not sitting up

Should i be overly worried?

DS3 is one in January and shows very little interest in sitting up. He can do it, for a few mins, but when i try and sit him up he arches right back and seems to prefer to be able to roll about on his front or back. He can weight bear on his legs, but not for long.

He's due his one year check the day before his first birthday - i'll obviously mention it then, but i'm not sure how worried about this i should be?

DD2 didn't really start sitting at all until she was very nearly one. She took off after that, although she didn't walk completely on her own until nearly 20 months.

HV said she was delayed but still within normal limits - she also watched her fine motor skills and said that she was very advanced with them, and therefore she wasn't very worried.

It was such a complete change from DS and as DD1 had been very severely disabled I paranoidly fretted until she was doing everything.

I just had a quick look at my DDs baby book, she started sitting up about a month after she started crawling. I am not sure if that is the natural progression. Is you DS crawling yet?

Now that you mention it, not crawling as such, more a commando type pull along, iyswim? He's quite happy and contented, and i've no other concerns with him at all.

My DS didn't crawl until his first birthday and didn't walk until he was 20 months. I was worried something was wrong, but it wasn't - turns out he was just taking his time and being a tad lazy!

Yes, DD is really chilled and lazy - were your other children a lot quicker Dee?

Well DS2 was prem, so had developmental delay - he's six now and perfectly fine.

DD was sitting up on her own by now, i'm sure, though i know she didn't walk til she was a good 16 months.

I think once he can do it for a few minutes, when it suits him, shows that he can at least do it!

DS had a small table with blocks and so on at it, DD2 would only sit when she was at this, so she could play with the toys.

I suppose that you just have to do all that you can to encourage it. We found that getting DD to sit on a booster seat at the table helped too, she was interested in participating with us at dinnertime.

DS did the rolling/sitting etc very early so I was worried because there was such a marked difference between them. Since I had DD2, I have talked to so many people who say that their DC was the same. It definitely alleviated the walking dears I had, I just waited for he to do it.

both my girls didnt sit till 10/11months and eldest didnt walk till she was 2 years old and dd2 was 22 months before she walked. Someones kid has to be the last one, but always worth mentioning to hv. Do you sit him up often? It could be that he can but needs more practice at it.

dd1 didn't sit-up properly until after she started walking! she could do it, v. strong neck good con trol from early on but just wasn't interested. she started rolling, both ways, though before she was 4 mo and i think was always just happier being on her front/ back to do things. she is 3 now and would sit in front of the tv all day if she was let .
incidentally dd2 sat up on her own unaided by 4 1/2mo, so they are all different.
as long as they seem happy healthy in other ways i wouldn't be worried.

Just got back from his one year check. I mentioned my concerns to the HV, she examined him, then called in a colleauge, who also examined him.

They are concerned about the way he sits up - he won't bend his knees, and screams when you do bend them. They think there might be something wrong with the tendons/ligaments in his legs or his hips.

They have referred us straight to the Peadiatric Orthapeadics as a matter of urgency and hopefully we'll be seen in a couple of weeks.

I feel like such a shite mother. I should have known there was something wrong. I thought that he was just a bit lazy, i thought he'd be fine in his own time.

You have been doing your best for him, and now he's been referred, so he'll be seen by a specialist - the best outcome.

I hope that whatever it is - if "it" is something, gets sorted out for you both, iyswim.

Is he your first?

When you say 'bend his knees' do you mean straighten them to sit flat on the floor, or to flex them upwards iyswim.

If he cant straighten them out it could certainly be tight muscles and tendons around the joints.

Was he prem? Did you have any problems in the pregnancy.? Reading through even before your last post I wouldnt say laziness at this age. And you are not a shite mum at all!

When he's sat on the floor, his legs go straight out.. sort of making like a massive 'V', apparently, his knees are supposed to bend, ao he's sat with his feet together and his legs making a shape, if that makes sense. When the HV bent his knees, he cried loads - real tears and all - and then when he'd calmed down she did it again and it was obvious he was in pain, but i've not noticed anything at all at home.

No, he wasn't prem. Induced at 39 weeks because i had GD. Apart from the GD pregnancy was fine. Normal delivery, no problems.

As i said, i've not had any concerns about him before this - he's an otherwise happy and healthy little chap.

Dee. Thats very odd, I would know what the problem if he was unable to straighten his legs, but the not bending is odd! I can see why he has been referred to a pead orthopod rather than a community (developmental) paed.

Does he bend his knees himself when rolling etc without pain?

He bends them if i stand him up, he can't weight bear yet properly, but other than that, i've not noticed anything, tbh.

Bit really. If he bends them when weight bearing why cry when HV does it? It probably isnt too much too worry about as he seems fine in other ways and is not massively delayed. Good luck with your appointment and dont worry.
