inguinal hernia - help!

My baby boy has been diagnosed today with an inguinal hernia - he is 10 weeks tomorrow.

The GP said she will send a referal to the surgeon either today or tomorrow and we have to wait for a reply until we can do anything more. In the meantime, we are faced with trying to stop him crying when he's hungry, tired etc as it makes the hernia worse. It's very difficult to stop him crying at times, and we are getting very stressed out trying.
Really scared about the whole thing - surgery etc., We're worried that the hernia will become strangulated and become an emergency.
Has anyone has a similar experience?? If so, maybe someone can give some advice/words of comfort! We are pretty stressed out as this is our first baby and has come as a bit of a shock. :-( Please help!
