SLAPPED CHEEK

I think DD may have it but not sure so can you pool your considerable knowledge to help me out please?

Symptoms of a pretty bad cold for the last 5 days or so - high temp, snottery, running eyes - malaise. Last night and today her left cheek is bright red. She has also wet herself 4 times in the past few days which has never happened since she has been toilet trained. DD said she couldn't make it to the toilet in time. All the googling states both cheeks?

Our DD had this too, and was generally unwell with these incredibly red cheeks. It is a viral illness and there is no exclusion period from a school or nursery because they were more infectious before the symptoms appear, but obviously they can feel quite unwell. Once the red cheeks appeared I don't think it lasted too much longer. She was about 4 at the time. I think it is a calpol and lots of drinks and cuddles until it passes.

I really don't know about it being both cheeks.

Obviously if you are worried, phone the NHS Direct or get an emergency appointment.

NHS choices suggest both cheeks would be affected

DS2 and his school had slapped cheek and it was epidemic in our area. I contracted too and didnt know for nearly 3 years before i got it diagnosed. I have had alot of treatment for it because i had it severely. It can affect just one cheek and can make the ear red too as if you have slapped them acrooss the face and ear. Some children are off clour for a few days, some are ok but have a red face. Others get a lacey rash on the face, neck, legs and abdomen sometimes. Some get a temperature too. It is lso listed as Fifth's disease.

Please dont let them go near anyone pregnant as it can cause hydrops fetalis and they can loose the baby.
