Dd is 12 weeks. ds is almost 4 (birthday this week).

Dh has a cold like illness and a v v high temperature - he has spent all da with them as we thought it was just a cold tbh until his fever spiked tonight.

Dd has had no vaccinations as has had several viruses and theyve been cancelled each time (by doc).

Ds was really ill with a virus just a few weeks ago. He also has suspected asthma. Dh also sleeps in his bedroom.

I am utterly terrified that thsi is swine flu and that they will catch it or that it is some other bug.

I have anxiety since having dd anyways and this week has been awful as she had a chest infection (but no temp) then a reaction to the antibiotics and today was supposed ot be the first day with no health things to worry about.

Help! I am so worried about dh and also about the kids. More so the kids as am hoping dh can fight it off whatever it is. Its ds's birthday this week and obv xmas and I just wanted it to be nice as this year has been v v hard for us all. Mainly though I am obviously concerned for their health and life even.

I dont know,she is 12 weeks.

The birth was traumatic to me but other people have much worse experieinces and dont go to pieces.

Breastfeeding was a disaster too which I wasnt expecting as I bf ds. She had a tongue tie. Midwives were downright rude in the hospital.

Yeah anwyays not going to start thinking about it.

TheUnmentioned - if it was traumatic to you that's all that matters. It sounds pretty hairy to me and that combined with the bf issue sounds like a recipe for PND (though I'm no expert). Not sure if it would be diagnosed as PTSD as I think there are criteria that have to be met (don't know what they are btw) but you definitely need some help. I hope the wait for counselling isn't too long. Maybe you should look on the mental health boards for some other posters who suffer from anxiety.

TheUnmentioned · 20/12/2010 19:02

ds now has highest temp he has ever had

dd had diorrhea - can never spell that!!

stressing esp because i am exhausted and anaemic

What did the doctor say?

TheUnmentioned · 20/12/2010 19:46

chest clear, throat ok, get on with it essentially...

problem is ds has only had a fever 3 times in last year, he has been hospitalised both other times because he is big for his age so the normal calpol dose has no effect. we know from 3 weeks ago he needs 15 not 10ml but doc today says we must NOT give the higher dose, seems silly, he will end up in hosp again if he needs the 15ml - a hosp 20 miles along snowy icy roads

Unmentioned I feel like you've just described my thoughts in your posts :( but I just wanted to say can you give your DS nurofen? Works much quicker at bringing a temp down (my DD1 has prolonged fits with high temperatures so I've gotten good at controling them) :)

winnybella · 20/12/2010 20:12

But you give it per kg, not per age. So yes, you can. DD is 22mo and 13 kg so I give her a dose for a 13kg child not a 22 mo iyswim. As per instructions. Age has nothing to do with it Confused. Doc was talking bollocks I'm afraid.
And obv. you can alternate with ibuprofen.

TheUnmentioned · 20/12/2010 20:48

mmmmmchocolate im sorry you feel this way too

yep giving nurofen

yes i thought per kg but apparently not, even rang back for 2nd opinion.

feeling so upset and worried still

OP posts:
winnybella · 20/12/2010 20:51

er..yes, per kilo. what does it say on the bottle/notice?

TheUnmentioned · 20/12/2010 20:54

it says age 1-6 10ml. he is only 4 but is v tall and heavy.

When DD1 had a high temp about a year ago we took her to see a lovely lady doc who took her weight and worked out the maximum dose of nurofen and calpol we could give her. I think at the time it was something like 10mls of calpol and 7.5 of nurofen which she said could be given together or alternate them about every 3 hours. Shes 3 and a half now but the height/weight of a 5 year old. Is this info on the NHS website?

winnybella · 20/12/2010 21:07

Interesting. See here in France all paracetamol (syrup, suppositories) are marked according to weight. So in the liquid one I've got a syringe and so give a precise amount according to the weight, kg by kg. Suppositories exist for weight up to 12 kg, then 13-16 and then 16-34 etc.

If he weights as much as a 6 yo, he will be fine with a dose for a 6yo. You can also try giving 13ml or whatever-so it's a bit less. I never overmedicate my children and I wouldn't want you to overdose, but I swear that dosing is by weight. On my syrup it says it's 15mg/kg per dose. 15 mg of paracetamol, not of the syrup, obv.

Sirzy · 20/12/2010 21:09

If the hospital have happily given 15ml I would give that tbh.

winnybella · 20/12/2010 21:10

What's the strength of calpol how many mg/ml?

TheUnmentioned · 20/12/2010 21:14

Tbh Id be nervous about giving the 15ml, not because it would do any harm I know it wouldnt but because the doctor was really forthright in his opinion that we must not do this. I think he is wrong too btw. I mean it's not as if ds gets calpol regularly even, he had a fever last Dec, a few weeks ago and today - that's it. I dont really tend to give meds unless he really needs it as I dont take paracetamol etc myself until I really need it.

OP posts:
winnybella · 20/12/2010 21:18

How much does he weight?

winnybella · 20/12/2010 21:19

or weigh, even

TheUnmentioned · 20/12/2010 22:28

No idea tbh I just know the hospital said 15ml.

Anyways, he has just woken up crying and shaking but temp ok, horrible sounding cough though.
winny you are being a real star!

OP posts:
winnybella · 20/12/2010 22:38

I had a look at Calpol website and yes, I see that they do it by age- not to confuse people, I guess.

Right, the doc said it was just a bug- not flu-right?

Ergo, not dangerous (not that flu is so dangerous, but I can understand your anxiety), so they should be fine(ish) for Christmas and if your DD gets it-hope not-it will just be a PITA,but she'll be ok.

Take care of yourself, if you didn't get it yet, there's a chance you won't, so no kissing, using same towels etc etc.

And DP is on the train, yay!

winnybella · 20/12/2010 22:44

Oh, and also the horrible cough-if his chest was clear, that's just the stuff from the nose going down his throat- DD vomited few times these last few days from coughing so much-but she's fine, just a cold. So don't stress about the cough for now, use saline spray to keep his nose relatively clean and also bed rest is best ime for these infections-no running about etc- the body needs all the energy it's got for fighting the infection. I know it's hard to keep a 4yo in bed whole day, though. But first of all, don't stress Smile

TheUnmentioned · 20/12/2010 22:50

Thanks Winny, he didnt say not flu he said there was no way of knowing and he didnt care anyways

Bedrest - hmmmmmm, will be interesting. I am going to snuggle him (not too hot) on the opposite couch to me and dd tomorrow - lots of dvds-, dh is not goign into work as his temp still up and he feels awful. Dont really like having dh in same room as me and dd but tbh ds wants to be near me so I cant banish them both upstairs and the fact that dh is here means he can look after ds whilst I look after dd so no cross contamination hopefully.

I just dont know if its flu, dh has still been able most of the time to do stuff though was in bed until 1230 today (understandably). ds was really flagging by tonight, curling up and wanting to sleep which is NOT like him but equally he was also climbing under the pram and telling me the mug I got dh with photos of ds and dd on made them (ds and dd) look like idiots!!

OP posts:
TheUnmentioned · 20/12/2010 22:50

Oh and am so pleased dh is on the train. How is your son? He ran into a wall didnt he?

OP posts:
winnybella · 20/12/2010 22:56

Nah, doesn't sound like a flu. You are not able to do anything with the flu-it really is different from a cold. They'll be fine, don't worry.

DS is fine, went to his dad's tonight and they are going to the South of France tomorrow for Christmas and NY (we alternate years). He's healing ok, looks a bit scary as has got a huge bruise/scab on his chin, but the inside of the lips (which I worried about) should be ok, I think.

I have a cold though and I can just feel it turning itself into a minor chest infection. I have to stop smoking Xmas Angry at self!

TheUnmentioned · 20/12/2010 23:08

you stop smoking and ill stop eating too much chocolate!!
