7yo with high temp 38.7 for a week now

I had him at the go last week, as he has also had a cough for 4 weeks now and i wanted him checked out, as he was hospitalised last year with Pneumonia after chicken pox.
DS' chest was clear but gp did prescribe antibiotics in case he got wheezy over the weekend, which he hasn't.

The high temp only started the day he was at the gp; he's quite heavy around the eyes, has a loss of appetite and gets quite tired.

Should I get him back to docs or continue to treat at home with calpol and nurofen?

There is a lot of this at the moment, all over the UK with kids. My DS1 is 8 and has been off all week with the same symptoms. he was sick lots on Monday and he felt better and his temp went down, but like many of his friends, he has been totally wiped out by it, sleeping in the say which ha has not done for years! He looks pale and grey around the eyes, but is eating cereal, sweets, cheese on toast and sliced apple, and weeing and pooing OK.

I have not been to the docs, but a couple of friends have and were told is a nasty virus, just ride it out, but of course keep an eye on them, plenty of fluids. A much rest as is needed.

I thought DS2 would be back at school today, but he was still asleep at 8.35am, so he did not go; it's a good job I work from home!

Yeah it's a nasty bug that takes ages to clear. DS (15) has been off since last Thursday, so a full week. I was really hoping to get him into school for his last day so he could pick up some work to do over christmas. I was all brusque with him this morning, bustled him out of bed and through the bathroom, then he fell asleep while getting dressed and didn't wake til after midday :(

We've just had a massive friends invasion though (think there are 8 of them up there at the moment) so I think he's finally on the mend, although still coughing quite badly.

If I was you, I don't think I'd bother taking him back unless he gets worse. There's always NHS Direct if you have a day to waste are really worried.

thanks. The thing about him is, he's been fine in the mornings, has been wanting to go to school (and has only missed one day). Its the evenings when his temp goes high again and he looks awful. Now that he has done his nativity play, I think I'll keep him off. Thanks for replying, I don't like wasting GPs time

Same here, my 5 year old came down with it a week ago... High temp cough/flu like symptoms, thought we had turned a corner and tonight he has temp again. I am also in two minds as to drs or just more nurofen/calpol. Half his class are ill and all my friends kids seem to have something.

with the ongoing cough and the temp, i would be thinking of giving the antibiotics.

really, blinks? I'm really nervous of giving antibiotics if not 100% needed.

A virus should be gone in 7 days with 3/4 days of fever, 38.7 for a week is a lot, he probably has an infection and would need the antibiotics.
Go back to your GP if you are not sure (did your GP gave you the antibio and said used them after a week if not better? )

mamaloco gp prescribed the antib's to be used only if needed.

He is so up & down, one minute he is absolutely finew and the next, very pale, tired etc, I think that is what is stopping me from going back to the gp and indeed from giving him the antib's

well, having had pneumonia, with a prolonged cough and ongoing temp, the antibiotics would be MY next step.

with HIM having had pneumonia, i meant.

I would say that after a week at 38.7, they are needed even if he only looks sick part of the day. DD1 has a lot of throat infections, and does that OK in the morning then bad again usually better after 4 days of antibio unless wrong antibio is given (like last time).

Our GP wants to see them again if a temperature from a supposedly viral infection lasts for more than 5 consecutive days. So I'd at least call and speak to the GP.

i have this bug and my children. DS1 is on day 7 and temp just spiked again at 39.5. I feel awful, my temp is 28.3 but i cant take much fpr it as i am pregnant. Im scared for the baby (meant to having elcs xmas eve)
