Advice please-should I give DS the ABs?

DS is 8 months. He saw doc on Weds who prescribed standby ABs after listening to his chest. DS didn't get worse and his temp went down after a couple of days. He is much better in himself and his temp is normal but his chest sounds awful. At night he is clearly in pain. I've given him quite a lot of Calpol/Nurofen (within doses, but for 3 days at start) so I'm reluctant to give him any more. I did last night though and he settled very quickly and slept much better.

To me, if he has no temp then there is no infection, but I may be totally wrong.

I'm not sure whether I should go ahead with the ABs prescribed, go back to doc or ride it out with calpol/ nurofen at night.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like he is getting better overall from what you are saying. The chest can stay noisey for a bit as the phlegm all loosens before it starts to clear. So personally I would not give the antibiotics now unless he starts to get worse instead of better at this stage. If it persists then I would ask GP to listen again to check for infection on the chest.

It is fine to carry on giving the calpol/neurofen for longer than 3 days and IMO better to do that if he is suffering and it is helping.

Thanks for replying cupofcoffee. I went to speak to the pharmacist about it, who said much the same as you.
