DD is four - is it thrush????

DD is four and has been complaining that her bottom is very sore - she means her vulva. Anyway, I had a good look and it is quite red. All I can think of is that it's thrush - although I can't see any discharge. Do you think it's likely? I have no idea why she would have it.... Anything else that it could be??

If it is thrush, I was thinking of putting a tiny amount of Canesten cream on it, maybe mixed with something else to make it less strong... Although it just treats the symptoms rather than curing it... What do you think?

When I took DD (3.5) to the docs with similar he said it was thrush. We got regular Canesten to apply. She has flare ups on a regular basis (think down to poor wiping) and we apply it for a couple of night to clear it up. Just needs gentle wipe with warm water and apply a thin layer.

Thanks Mylife.
When you say poor wiping, do you mean wee or poo? (sorry, too much information !!!)
The reason why I ask is that I still wipe DD after she does a poo (she always seems to do them at home with me)...

Is it worse at night? Could be worms if so.

DD gets this in the winter from wearing tights more often than she would normally.

Also wiping is an issue.

Daydreaming · 05/12/2010 19:30

No, I think it's during the day Tatty
I did think worms, but her anus is not sore, just her vulva

Just wiping pee, like you I have to do the poos!

DD only had redness and soreness as a symptom - no discharge

Many thanks for all your responses - sounds like trush then.

Could it be a urine rash? My DD now 4 for a long time was misdiagnosed with thrush. Occasionally she did have thrush with an obvious discharge in her knickers and itching. Other times however she just had a red vulva that would itch. Eventually a friend suggested it be a urine rash and gave me some Drapolene cream which can be used to treat this.

Its caused by a couple of factors in my daughter, she doesnt drink enough fluids, no matter how much we try and persuade her although shes much better now. This makes her urine very strong which then burns her when in contact with skin. She also hardly used to go to the toilet, sometimes only once a day (!) so her urine would be even stronger.

Once we cracked the fluids thing and also taught her correct wiping (front to back) we've hardly had any problems since.

Also worth noting that thrush is a very persistent skin bug which looks like its cleared up after a couple of days, but you really need to use the cream for a whole 7 days to get rid of it. A few different docs told me this.

Yes, it is red and itchy, I use canesten or a soothing cream when its bad, and I try not to let her wear tights every day.

mankyscotslass · 05/12/2010 20:13

It's canesten we got for her from the doctor btw, not mine! Grin

Thanks Manky.

That's really intereswting Cazwa - that could be it. DD does not drink that much either - and now that's she has started school, it's worse - she drinks in the morning, and after school, but I think she drinks very little while at school. So it could be a urine rash - that would be the most logical explanation.
I will monitor it and maybe get some of that Drapolene cream.

I guess kneeling on the floor and peering closely at DD's vulva is part of mummy duties !!! Grin
