Car sickness and dvd player

My dd1 (3) seems to get car sick. she's thrown up a couple of times when she has been given a comic in the car.

Would a dvd player have the same effect? My brother wants to get her one for Christmas.

Reading is definitely a no no with travel sickness. Apparently you should look out the front car window at the horizon. (very boring I should imagine for a child) I know plenty of children with dvd players in the car but not whether they had car sickness at any point. I'd be interested to know from other mums?

We found (from a sample of 1 car sick child - DS) that a dvd makes him throw up much less because he looks inside the car. (He only started getting car sick once he was old enough to look out of the window and I think it used to make him dizzy/nauseous.) So I'd recommend trying them, it's not the same as reading at all.

DD occasionally watches stuff on the netbook on very long journeys. IME it made her really sick, even with travel sickness pills, sorry.

Yes it makes my nieces much worse if she's watching the portable DVD....could be an expensive mistake for your brother..

Looking at the horizon is the best way to stop car sickness or sea sickness. Laying down or looking down is the worst thing to do.

If the DVD player is one of those strapped on to the back of the seat in front it may help but not a video player or a video game (like a DS) on the childs lap.

Incidentally, if anyone has a dog that gets car sick, that is also the best way of stopping it happening. Keep their head up looking out of the window and they wont be sick.
