4 week old with cold/cough

DS2 is 4 weeks old and has developed a tickly cough over the last 24 hrs (DS1 and DH have both had colds so no guesses where it came from). He dosen't appear to have a temp and is feeding fairly normally (poss slightly less milk than he has been taking but still a good amount). Just wondering how I manage the cold/cough and when in someone so young I should if nec. take them to the doc esp for the cough? DS1 was summer born and much older when he got his first proper cold so by then we were on to calpol etc and he seemed so much bigger!!

Hope this isn't a draft question its just that he's so small so don't want to miss something important or on the other hand make a fuss over what will be the first of many colds this winter.

Just the normal raising head of cot. Hot bowel of water in the room he is sleeping in. Just watch out for bronchiolitis. If he gets worse or seems to finding it hard to breath take him straight to the doctors.

And saline drops (or sterimar) before feeding/sleeping. Also, room not too hot (i.e. not over 20 degrees celsius) and humidifier (ideally warm mist) if you have one. Hope he gets better soon.

As other have said you need to read up on bronchiolitis. DS had it at ~ 12 weeks.

A cough in a young baby is not normal and should be taken seriously. This does not constitute making a fuss.

I would recommend that you go to out of hours clinic tomorrow so that a doctor can observe your baby breathing.

I took my DS to the out of hours clinic (which was situated in the local hospital) and we got sent to the children's ward .

DS had his oxygen levels measured and did not require hospitalisaiton but we were given "open access" to get straight back to the children's ward.

I have just spoken to a nurse advisor at my ooh as dd3 not well (8 weeks). Learnt more out of this thread!

Thanks for all your help - DS2 had a rough night last night so we took him to out of hours doc this am - she gave him a good check over and declared him ok (well nothing serious - no chest issues etc etc though obviously could see he had a cold/cough)though said we were right to bring him and said to bring him straight back if we have any further concerns. He's spent a sleepy afternoon with Dad watching TV - the dad that is DS2 is a bit young to enjoy watching repeats of xmas specials on Gold! DS2 is feeding but not up to normal standards so hopefully the sleep etc is doing him good.
